PENZEL MUELLER INDIA HARD RUBBER MOUTHPIECE

Does anyone have any knowledge of the history of the Penzel Mueller India Hard Rubber mouthpieces? I got one with an old Penzel clarinet and it is unusually good!

My first "good" cl was my teacher's Full Boehm dating from the 1920's, his mp was an O'Brien glass. Since then, doing horn trading, I have inherited 2 Penzel-Mueller mps, one with the oval [like on the cl] and one with PM in a script "line". Each plays quite well and are "dedicated " to the cl. I have heard that these and perhaps others [Bettoney and Pruefer, etc] of that time period MAY have been made by Chedeville, but more likely by Woodwind [NYC] and were of high quality. I did have briefly a pair of Penzel [Albert system] cls of earlier dates. What insigna is on your mp? India?, of course then only natural rubber from Asia was available for being sulfur-hardened [vulcanized] for mps and bodies. Interesting ! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks Don. Yes, it says India Hard Rubber across the back of the mouthpiece. Then at the bottom it has the Penzel Mueller logo in an oval. I too had heard that Penzel used Chedeville blanks, but this one doesn't seem to have the "Qualite Superiuere" logo. There is a single line below and single line above. It also seems to have a slight concavity to the table. It plays beautifully.

My former teacher, a player in the NSO, seeks these out assiduously.

Have just acquired a penzel-mueller brilliante - same one I played back in 1949 and loved the great mechanics of it - fast, smooth, and smaller sized keys. But - I have no mouthpiece that fits the small bore barrels. Am hesitant to sand down the mouthpieces I now have (selmer, buffet, gigliotti) because I don't want to ruin them for my Buffet. Any suggestions?

I'd sand down the barrel socket but that's just me.

In my experience, the India Hard Rubber blanks are by far the best renditions of any mouthpiece Penzel Mueller offered. They are most likely Chedeville blanks that were made during the golden era of Chedeville. Not all of them are the same however. Some were finished poorly and lack ideal internal dimensions. Since yours is such a nice player I would suggest leaving it alone. Play it and enjoy. Don't trade it though...it is a keeper.

The "Qualite Superiuere" logo being absent is a good thing because QS was used much later and would typically represent mouthpieces that are much newer and made from material that isn't the same. Your India Rubber blank was made when the more coveted "Artistic Facing" and the interlocking CC trademarks would have been used. But please don't be confused by the lack of those trademarks on your mouthpiece as I have never seen India Rubber paired with those markings.

Congratulations on your fine acquisition!

Will try sanding down the barrel socket - I don't see that it could cause any harm to have a thinner wall - the horn is very old and if the wood was going to crack I suppose it would have happened already. The bell has a healthy crack, but that can be fixed easily enough with no harm. Thanks Sue, for the sanding of the socket suggestion.
