 Keith Stein Biographical Information
Author: ABRosas

I am researching the great clarinet pedagogue Keith Stein. I have read his book, The Art of Clarinet Playing, and it is wonderful! The only problem I'm having is finding biographical information. I do know that he graduated from the University of Michigan, taught at Michigan State University for 41 years, and taught at Interlochen. However, I can't find the dates for Mr. Stein himself- I don't even know if he is deceased or not! Is his information perhaps in another edition of his book? Are there any "musical biographies" anyone knows of? I have searched this wonderful bulletin board and found many pedagogy discussions, but no information on the man himself. Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Hi ABR - Yes he was, and via "The Art ----" still is, one of our master cl'ists. David Pino, in his book, greatly based on Keith's book and close acquaintance [I believe], is the best source of bio info I know of. K S conducted our Mich State concert band several times during my years [as a lowly 2-3 rd clist], 1936-7-8 [Leonard Falcone GREAT conductor, baritone horn player !!], however [at age 86] I cant remember much other than being very impressed. I'm sure the Music School at MSU can provide much info re: his years there. Many of Keith's students could help also. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

After-thought, the ICA [journal] recently published quite a series of Pino writings which prob. have bio info well beyond his book. Don

He was a clarinetist in the Chicago Symphony for a short time, 1931-32 according to the Symphony's website.

Keith retired to Green Valley, AZ, a town just south of Tucson , Arizona and passed away in 1985 or 86.

Hi,
I took clarinet lessons from Keith Stein when I was a student at Interlochen in High School. If you would like any information please respond to this message.
Sincerely,
Rita Goodman Ruderman
