Try www.clarinet.org for the International Clarinet Association (ICA) web page. They publish a journal 4x/year. If you join the ICA, you automatically receive the journal (you will not find the journal, "The Clarinet", on newstands; the only way you can receive it is as an ICA member).

I heard this German clarinet magazine, which is famous for its deep professinalism. To my sorry, I do not read German and have not search its contact address.

I'm wondering if there have been any new publications out since this thread was run 10 years ago? As an amateur I'm not sure whether membership in the ICA would be useful (aside from receiving The Clarinet Journal).
Thank you!

I'd like to see more international stories, reviews of new clarinets (ie German ones, hand made ones, anything super esoteric), equipment reviews..........ya know, stuff like we grind through on this blog.
The Clarinet back in the 80s (last time I bothered to look) seemed a very pedestrian review of pedagogical stuff related to those "in the club" or about those who "the club knew well." Of course that's back in the day when there was the whole "KlarFest" splinter group of which I was one.

Well, good luck seeing that. Magazines of all sorts are going under fast, and nobody in their right mind would start a new one for such a niche market. In essence, sites like this have taken the place of any new clarinet magazines you might see.

I'd like to see a nice e-zine for clarinet. If I had a subscription I'd have stacks of clarinet mags to get griped at about like I do about my guitar, banjo, hotrod, slot car and Texas Monthly magazine collections.

I was wondering if there was a clarinet version of a magazine like "Flute Talk" (http://www.instrumentalistmagazine.com/magazinestore/catalog/Flute_Talk-29-1.html). It has pedagogical information, information about flute conferences and events, interviews, equipment reviews, has 10 issues a year and is relatively inexpensive. But I gather from the discussion that there isn't one! Thank you.

Well, you are more or less describing "The Clarinet" except that you won't see equipment reviews but you will see reviews of recent recordings -- 4 issues a year.
Best regards,
jnk

A long time ago there was an excellent magazine called Woodwind World. There was a merger (I think it was in the 70s), and they became Woodwind World Brass and Percussion. In its earlier days it was quite good, but by the mid to late 70s, the quality began declining fast. Ed Palanker wrote some great articles for them, but in its last days there was little else that was worth reading. While it's not strictly a clarinet magazine, I've had a subscription to the Instrumentalist for many years. It's decent, but it's not as good as it used to be.
EEBaum is right. This doesn't seem to be the best time to get into the print magazine business. Web sites like this one, and clarinet blogs (such as those from Dave Thomas and Sherman Friedland) have "taken the place of any new clarinet magazines you might see."

Again, thank you for your helpful comments.
I mine this board frequently for information and it is a tremendous resource! My thanks to all of you! I also read Sherman Friedland's column. Dave Thomas was a new site for me and I have bookmarked it. Are there other good on-line clarinet columns that you might recommend?
Thank you.

I'm not sure about other online clarinet columns, but these sites are good:

As Alex pointed out earlier in this revived thread, the economics of the magazine business bode ill for any start-ups and certainly don't permit The Clarinet to expand without raising dues considerably.
The Clarinet conducted a survey of its readership in 1998, asking for comment on various projects and programs of the I.C.A. In a "From the Editor's Desk" column in the December '98 issue, Jim Gillespie outlined some of the responses that dealt soley with the magazine.
In brief, he reported the following:
*Readers wanted more consistent coverage of jazz and jazz clarinetists.
* Some readers wanted a monthly, not a quarterly, publication.
(To this, he replied that this would require a full-time editor and a large increase in dues, neither of which was likely to happen.)
*Some wanted more historical articles, but did not specify what that meant.
*Some felt it was too clubby---too promotional for those who perpetually seek publicity. (To this he replied that some who have been invited to participate had declined to do so or ignored invitations.)
*More pedagogical material; ie, Michael Webster's column and others.
*More medical articles.
*More on reeds.
And finally:
"Our/my severest critic wrote: "Many of the articles I find to be very poorly written--they could use much more editing. Not that I want another slick publication--the homeliness (sic) is nice, but some of the info is very confusingly presented."
Essentially, it's up to the readers of The Clarinet to become its most insightful reporters and writers, and for professional players to become more involved. Not an easy task.
If we all wanted more reporting on equipment, perhaps three or four knowledgeable players--they need not be big-name pros--could play-test various instruments and render opinions on specific qualities. I'm not qualified to do so, but many other board members are. In other words, if you want to see it in The Clarinet, it's up to you.

Years ago I remember a magazine called Windplayer.
Had pretty good articles in it but I do believe is defunct now.
