Well, the oiling swab is this big puffy thing that absorbs the oil, and it has instructions. I didn't put much in my bore, I used a q tip to put some in the bore, then ran the swabby puff through. So it should be ok, right? I need to find a better oil, I don't trust the stuff I have. Where do I get this Sweet Alomond oil? I'm going to talk to my teacher about more tomorrow.

I use what is known to chemists as a bottle brush, putting quite a few drops of oil into it [after brushing the bore and cleaning out old cork grease etc from tenons and sockets], and "brushing" until all the interior has a slight "shine". It improves exterior appearance also. Its best to have all the normally-closed pads removed, but by "drying" the pads right away with a cloth, I haven't ruined any. The oil has a cleaning function also, as part of even a minor wood clar overhaul. Try it, Don

Yes, others [and I] seem to prefer the "sweet" almond oil, [slightly colored?] which may not say "bore oil" on its label. There are a number of translucent bore oils marketed via major cl maker names, I don't know about their compositions, but what I have used appear to be quite satisfactory, tho somewhat less viscous. This subject has been thread-and-post discussed, with several of our BBoarders going into research detail, L Omar Henderson and Paul, most recently. I suggest you "Search the Phorum" for that info, perhaps asking your specific questions. The subject IS important re: our good horn's health, IMHO. Don

hi,
When I use oil I always just put some aluminum foil over all the pads to kkep the oil off.

It says in the instructions to cover the pads with Wax paper. The instructions are pretty vivid, I guess. I'm not going to oil it much anymore, my teacher said not to worry about it.

Right, C G, I used the word "sparingly" elsewhere, and have since wondered from whence it came! I saw it now on bottles of LeBlanc bore oil while trying to find out it's composition for here. It does apply, and I endorse the use of pad protection. Luck, Don

I've found plastic kitchen wrap to be an easy way to protect the pads, since the wrap will stick to itself and make a pretty good seal. I oil (yes, sparingly!) on a New Year's and 4th of July schedule, and I oil a used clarinet to clean it when I first bring it home -- except for the one that the previous owner had already greased down as if she were getting it ready to barbeque! I spent the time on that one soaking some of that oil *off* the wood.
