Hi All,
I'm currently playing Malanka's Symp. #3 on Contrabass Clarinet ( paperclip! ) in ensemles here @ Fredonia and i'm falling in love with it. After some research I found that Maslanka wrote a piece for Clarinet with piano accompanyment. Does anyone know where i can find this ? I checked all the big music stores and they don't seem to have it.

Actually he wrote two pieces for clarinet and piano and one piece for solo clarinet. They are:
Fourth Piece for Cl and PF
Three Pieces for Cl and PF
Little Symphony on the Name of Barney Childs for solo Cl
I've never played through any of them, however, I have played some music by Maslanka (Montana Music was commissioned by my high school) and he writes excellent -- difficult but excellent -- music. Slightly off topic, but I also want to express my admiration and enjoyment of Maslanka's work. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to play in a concert at Carnegie Hall and we performed his symphony #4, and that was perhaps the most rewarding musical experience I've had. You can hear it here:

He has also apparantly written a concerto for clarinet and wind symphony. According to the Illinois State University website, David Gresham (professor of clarinet there) was scheduled to perform the world premier with the ISU wind symphony in November last year.

"A Child's Garden Of Dreams" is currently my favorite piece of music, from what i've been exposed to (In Memorium, Tears, A Childs Garden of Dreams).
Does anyone know where a recording of the orchetral version of this piece might exist?
Also, has anyone played his woodwind quitet? I'd be interested in playing it, but I've heard almost nothing about it. Thanks!

Maslanka has written 2 woodwind quintets. Both are gorgeous, but very, very difficult. Maslanka was/is a clarinetist himself, so he knows how to stretch a player's technique.

Yes, i've heard that he was a clarinetist... I dont' know if he ever played at a professional level though, or if he continues to play very often. It's not like he has to, his music has made him rich.

"A Child's Garden of Dreams" is an amazing piece!! I played it last semester with the Wind Ensemble also at Fredonia. Symphony #3 is comparably good (awesome bassoon parts!)
