For the people here that make there own reeds(not just adjust them). Make them from scratch, what kind of blanks do you use and where do you get them from

My answer won't be of too much help, but for Christmas I got some blanks ordered from a discount magazine called Muncy Winds. It's a great catalogue for woodwind stuff. I haven't begun to make the reeds yet, so I don't really know how the cane quality is. But there's one option for you, at least.

Davie Cane, a BB sponsor, sells Gonzalez tube cane and reed blanks of the same high quality cane as their reeds - an option.

I make reeds from scratch, and Davie Cane is what I use most of the time. The other source that I've had the distinct pleasure of trying is Proboe Shop cane. One of my teachers gave me a tube of it to try but, unfortunately, Guy Hardy has been out of clarinet tube cane for some time. I'll keep waiting though, it was great stuff, my best reeds ever came from that tube, I only use them for important concerts. I don't use pre-made blanks, as I like to use a very thick blank, and the only way to get one that thick is to make it yourself, so that's what I do. It's less expensive in the long run to make it from the tube as well. There's a greater initial investment in the splitter, planer and profiler, but you only buy them once. I use a ReeDual to make the actual cut of the reed using an old Morre copy or (gasp!) a Legere. I actually like the cut of the Legere a great deal, but the sound just isn't quite the same. They work great for outdoor ceremonies though.

I make reeds from blanks. I use the AW-Reeds, Foglietta and Pflaumer blanks. I myself think Steuer reeds have very good canes but it seems to me that they don't sell blanks.
