Does anyone know anything about Bonade Mouthpieces?
I just bought a Leblanc L7 on Ebay and it has one. I have not received it yet and I cannot make out the model in the photo, but the name Bonade is on the bevel just below where your upper teeth rest.

I purchased a Leblanc Classic about 2 years ago that I have sold, and it came with a D Bonade nouthpiece. It wasn't bad, just a little to close for my playing. It had a pretty focused sound, a little on the resitive side. When I sold the classic I included it in the sale.

Several Bonade mpx were produced. Some were on good blanks and were very good, some had ridges on the table (intentional), while others that displayed his name were suboptimal. Some were made under the name of Meliphone or a name akin to it.
The Bio. of Bonade mentions these (avail. from Van Cott and others).
DB was somewhat entrepeneurial and also had reeds made (Surfine) under his name. His students would show up with them (....or else...) but used a "better" brand. (my quotes).

When I was studying with Bonade at Juilliard (early 50's) we were all pretty much "persuaded" to buy his "Melior" mouthpieces. Some of the better players used them for their weekly lessons, but played on something else when they had outside gigs. Not to detract from Bonade's greatness as a teacher, but he did sometimes use his coercive power in a way that would be less acceptable in today's academic climate!

Bonade "Qualite Superieure" blanks are some of the best blanks ever produced by Chedeville. (facing numbers up to 7 1/2) The problem is that whoever finished these mouthpieces did a very lousy job.
The same applies to Bonade "Clarity" mpc. in the pic.

I have three, two expertly refaced by Vytas Krass and one by Brad Behn. They are very fine, and they seem to take the diufferent facings and treatments (close "Matsen" facing, a Bay MOM facing, and a characteristically open B.B. facing) very well.
Funny, but I have indeed found that they seem to work well with Leblanc instruments.
Bill.

Hopefully this one was refaced. Time will tell. The photo of the face side show a very clear picture of a truely beatup reed firmly in place. so you cannot see anything.

Thank you Vytas for supplying the names Melior and Clarity.
Meliphone stuck in my head for some reason.
I presume that the cuts in the table were for the same reason that others made a concavity.
I saw a pic of the new Backun/Morales mpc (it was on their website then more or less[sic] quickly vanished), and it had similar cuts on the table, but appeared to be below the level where the reed would be seated. I do not know what function they serve, but perhaps someone could elaborate.

This mouthpiece is probably a Bonade Clarity with the three indentions or cuts across the table that were designed to help with reed vibration. Some of these mouthpieces are very good, most will need re-facing. The more interesting part of this picture is actually the vintage Sumner Accousticut ligature--made of very fine nickle silver and similar in quality in my opinion to the Frank L. Kaspar ligatures of the same period. Chester Rowell
