My friend and I are arguing and need someone to answer a question. Say you are playing some music and you come to a turn on a D. Do you do up to E, down to D, down to C and back up to D. Or do you start at D, go down to C, up to D, up to E and down again to D? Please help. I know I am right, but my stubborn trumpet friend is being stupid. Thanks!!

You go UP first--D,E,D,C.....unless you're playing Wagner, in which case you reverse it (as in the overture to "Rienzi") and would play D, C, D, E, D. Maybe you're both right!

it depends on the shape of the turn but more than likly you'll get the turns that mean to go Up, back, down, back

turns, no matter which kind~ up or the ones that start going down, only include 4 notes, no more, no less!For example say the turn is Between notes "E" and "F", you would play the "E" but not count it in the turn then play,
"F,E,D,E" then go up to "F". If the turn is one that goes down you and it fell between notes "E" and "F" it would be played "D,E,F,E". The general pattern is "Up,Back, Down, BAck" or "Down,Back,Up,Back" depending on which turn is written. Now that we are all thoroughly confused let's try to differentiate between which one means go up and which one means go down... Hay De Me, my head is spinnng!

It is very easy to determine if the turn goes up or down. The turn marking itself will show you. Just follow the shape of the turn. If the first "hump" is up, go up and then down. If the first "hump" is down, start by going down and then go up.

Congrats!! I love it when a plan falls together! Thank you dee in clarifying the direction of the turn. I wasn't sure exactly how to explain it shape other than saying its a funky sideways "S"!!

Speaking of betting with brassholes...if you talk about fairy tales (i.e. Rapunzel) you can win big...just make sure you review before you bring it up ;o)
On the turn issue I just kind of let my fingers do what they want to do. Turns are fun!

Ah - bad idea, especially if you're supposed to be in unison with someone else ...
The turn sign indicates which way - just follow the "hump".
