Just to let those of you considering a career in music know about the openings at some of the top conservatories / universities. Here's how many clarinetists will get to enter as freshman this year:
Curtis - 1
Cleveland Inst. of Music - 1
New England Conservatory - 2
USC - 3 (Gilad's studio)
DePaul - 6 (I hear)
Eastman - 4

Thanks for the info. I have been wondering how many openings there were for a while. Is there any way to tell how many openings there will be for the freshmen of fall 2001? Or do you have to wait until that year?

They're approximately the same every year at the top schools.

I believe you listed some very prestigious schools mainly in the northern part of the US. That's okay.
However, aren't there some other universities that offer music programs that are pretty good, too? I could drop a few names of what I believe are good universities that have renowned music programs, but that's not the point. My perspective on college life and the quality of one school versus another is almost 20 years out of date. Plus, my major was in engineering, not music. Perhaps it would be better to hear from folks who are actually trying to get into a music program, or trying to get their kids into programs, or are already in a music program at a college/university.
I believe it would be fair to have a listing of highly regarded music schools, both public and private, from all over the North American continent.

I listed what I knew - since those are some of the ones my son or his friends applied to. I do not and will not endeavor to list all the music schools in the US or abroad - the list is large, and some of the schools excel in different aspects of music that I or my son may not care about (a case in point - Indiana, with 3 excellent clarinet teachers, is currently more noted for its excellence in creating music teachers rather than performers).

I think that figure for DePaul is including graduate openings.. although i'm not sure
and as for USC.. I was talking to my friend and he said that Gilad had 2 openings.. ???
So your son is applying to these schools? How have his auditions gone so far?

It may be - I asked the admissions office and they said 6, but they may have added the grad openingins.

3 openings in his studio, for sure. I unoficcialy know the names of the 3 he'd let into his studio this year.

He's not applying to Eastman, but a number of his friends are, and he's applied to Northwestern & U of Mich, too - but I don't have numbers for those 2.
So far, so good. I have some very unofficial reports from a couple of places that look promising - but he's really hoping for the Cleveland opening, and dreaming of Curtis, and would be extremely happy with New England, and very happy with any of the others :^)

Just a short update (with a smile):
My son's been accepted into Gilad's studio at USC and to Tom Martin's studio at New England Conservatory, and is now a semi-finalist in the NFMC woodwind competition. I don't know when the finals will be yet.
We're waiting for Cleveland's response, and he'll be auditioning at Curtis this coming Monday. However, NEC & USC were 2 of his top 4 choices (Curtis & Cleveland are the other 2) so a great weight has been taken of off his (and my!) shoulders.
