 Pad screws on Buffet bass
Author: clarnibass

Hi

I investigated my Buffet bass and checked the pads. I noticed some pads have a screw in the middle. I looked more and noticed the pads that have the screw are in a flat cup, while the pads in regular (coned) cup don't have a screw.

I'm wondering why is that, does anyone know?

Thanks.

It's only a few main action pads on the top joint that have the flute-style screw in reflectors - I'm not sure why it's just those few pads when there are others that could do with them as well.

They're there primarily to keep the pad flat in the middle instead of bulging into the tonehole (as leather pads tend to do), though the pad is glued into the pad cup in the usual manner and the washer is screwed on after the pad is seated.

Thanks Chris.

The pads with screw are all pads that are in a flat cup. Those are the D/A pad and C/G pad on the upper joint, and the D/G pad on the lower joint.

What I would like to know is why the flat pad cups need pads with the screws and regular pad cups don't.

Also, are you sure the pads are leather? Aren't they Gore Tex pads?

Thanks.

They might have changed things since 2000 when I bought my bass, but the only Gore-Tex pads on my bass are on the register keys, the rest are all white leather (there was a cork pad for LH1 but I changed that for a leather one as I couldn't get a replacement in cork - it's around 16mm and the largest cork pads I have are 15.5 so they were a bit on the loose side in the cup).

As the fingerplates are castings (among the numerous castings used on these basses), they have incorporated a tube inside the cup that the reflector screws into - but I can't see why they don't soft solder a similar thing (as flutes have) on the other pad cups to keep the pads flat.

I have a big cork pad for that key. How did you get a leather pad with a hole in it? Did you make it yourself?

I just used a Glotin white leather pad and punched a hole through the middle with a leather punch, but sealed around the inside of the hole with shellac once it was seated.

The original cork pad got scorched when I got someone to do the keywork conversion for me - he scorched it when he took it out which was a shame as I'd prefer a cork pad on that key, though the leather one is firm so it doesn't feel squishy.
