Hello,
maybe due to the weather (cold and dry) the metal ring that is at the end of the middel joint (inside part) of my bass (buffet low C) has loosened. It doesn't come of, but can now freely rotate on the joint
Because it is no longer fixed the insertion and extraction of the joint into the lower part is very very difficult. I think the metal piece moves different from the wood and so create an additional obstruction.
Does anyone have any idea if it is possible to fix this metal piece again without first taking it off (this seems to be very dificult)
can it be due to the wood that has shrinked ? I have the same problem with the outer ring on the bell of by Bb. It can also freely routate, since a few days.
as you might think : in a panic I posted this and then read some other threads (and did a search). So panic as gone a little, but still, this is a rather tricky ring to deal with, so any suggestions still welcome.
Oiling ? Humifying ? pressing ?

i recently did a tour of the states and all the air conditioning and playing on top of ice rinks meant that every ring on my clarinet fell off!!!
lots of advice has been given about this on this site.... the most popular i have heard is keeping orange peel in your case which keeps up the humidity.... as yes.. it is just cos they have dried out....

This is the tenon cap and it is there for protection only so the fact that it is loose is not dangerous but a sign that the wood is slightly shrunk. The external ring at the top of the bottom section is the important one and must be tight or you can crack the lower section of the horn when assembling it. I would definitely get more humidity in your case or put the horn in a plastic bag with orange peels for a few nights. Same goes for your Bb bell.
The middle external tenon ring on my Buffet to low C was fully closed and yet free to rotate once I had partially disassembled the horn. I filed it a bit so it would stay snug all year round.
