 Marly Clarinet

Greetings all! A NOOB here to the board, though I've been reading it for some time.

I have an instrument that I'm hoping someone can tell me about as I haven't found anything in these forums or on the web.

It's an all wood clarinet. Markings include:
'Marly Paris' - on the bell, with the word Marly in scripted cursive
'MADE IN FRANCE' and 'MARLY PARIS' - all plain uppercase on the upper body
'42883' - on both the lower and upper body

It's probably mid-60's or earlier since I bought it used in 1972. I suspect it was originally purchased as a student clarinet by a Canadian high school.

The bore is approximately 0.57", straight with no appareunt undercut on the tone holes.

Any insight into the original manufacturer or quality of this clarinet would be appreciated (though I'll sleep tonight regardless). If there's anything anyone would like me to check or if a pic of some detail would be helpful, please let me know.

Cheers, Brian

Brian - I checked several of my books, including Rendall's extensive list of makers, no Marly. All I do with it is "a character in Dickens" and isn't there that name in London, ?Marlybone?, Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

The area of London is 'Marylebone' and is a corruption of 'Mary le Bow' after an old church. As far as I know, it has nothing to do with clarinets.

Don - Thanks for taking the time to try to look it up. Maybe I can rattle some chains and get old Scrooge to provide some insight. :-)

The listing in the New Langwill Index is for a company in the early 18th century - I don't thik it refers to your instrument.

The hell with what it's named. How does it handle and play?

It used to play nicely and had a beautiful tone. I was always complimented on my sound. I say "used to" because, unfortunately, it was packed away for several months during an international move and when I opened the case last week, I found that it's been seriously attacked by mildew. Really sad - I'm concerned that it's a write off.

Anyway, while trying to clean it up, I got curious about it's heritage, thus the inquiry on this board.

Brian

Are you sure it's not a "Gnarly" clarinet?
