 "Basset horn" name origin
Author: Joel Clifton

Was the basset horn named after the basset hound or something? I thought I heard something once about how it got its name, and I thought I remembered it was a joke or something.

Basset horn is named as a demunitive of the word "bass". Basset means "little bass". It was so named because of it rather low range which is comparable to that of the Bass instruments.

I'm making my stupid pet human type this. What a typical human response. Of course the basset clarinet is named for the basset hound. I mean, listen to it! If you play one of those things for a basset hound, the poor old dopey dog will join right in for a family chorus. He thinks it's his mommy talking to him, and he'll wag his skinny little tail and cast his bloodshot, watery eyes skyward where he thinks Dog Heaven is, and he'll moan, "Wooooo! Woowwww! Waaaaahhhhh! Yap yap yappety yip yop yawooooooow." And he'll think she's answering him from the Beyond. Gag me with a flea comb.

Dogs...sss.

The generally accepted derivation of the name is from "basset" meaning small bass and horn meaning a curved wind instrument. Early basset horns were curved rather than the modern two variants of straight and "saxophone shaped".

In all seriousness, my music dictionary - the Oxford Companion to Music - lists the derivation as a basset (small bass) invented by Mr Horn, a german instrument manufacturer. The "Horn" comes after the "Basset" in the same way that "Melba" comes after "Peach". This book was published in 1939.

Apparently this person isn't really paying attention to what she wrote. She said Basset CLARINET, which is different from the Basset HORN. And the Basset Horn sounds good if you actually know how to play it!!!!!
