I would try them both out and see which one you like, but I must say I really do like the Rovner. On my particular mouthpiece I get a good projection without sacrificing my sound quality.

Try ordering both from WWBW and then return the one that you don't like and use the money on reeds.

My assumption would have to be no, but it is worth it if one ligature provides a notable performance difference over the other for you.

they've been out of stock on the rovners for 3,4 months.
they keep pushing the delivery date back.

makes me wonder something happend to the folks who make the rovner ligatures, or , if ww&bw is just having their usual supply & computer issues.

Check out 1st stop clarinet for the ligatures. They usually have good prices.

I like Vandoren products in general, and their ligatures are very good. I use the Optimum ligature and I think the regular metal Vandoren ligature is also one of the best.
I don't have a lot of experience with Rovner but I don't really like leather/fabric/soft ligatures much at all.

thanks, seafaris, i would've saved about $1-3 for the items, but the swab i chose at wwbw was not found at that site, so in the end, i went with wwbw---i would've saved a few cents if i chose to go with 1stopclarinet and bought my second choice swab lol

what's wrong with leather/fabric ligatures? i haven't actually tried one myself except once (but it was in poor care and possibly a no-name brand rubber inverted), but my current bonade isn't really working that well--it's not matching with the reed and it's damaging it like crazy--still better than standard ligs, but i didn't manage to return it in time after i realized the defects

I keep coming back to Rovner light and Vandoren traditional - but be a devil and try everything. No way am I going to stick my neck out and re-light the great V12 debate. :-D

A soft ligature gives me a fuller sound, but I can see how it could be a bit 'much' for many players. Also the Rovner light doesn't bite into the reed at all.

I have some excellent metal ligatures, but I am concerned about damage to the mouthpiece when removing them. I am very careful but still have some minor screatches at the base of the table from one of my ligs.

I have used the Eddie Daniels, the Dark and the light. I like the light best of all. I have not used the Vandoren but it looks good. The Rovner light plays well and stays on without tyrning when adjusting the mouthpiece.

DTrinh,

The Rovner lig is often available in local music stores (the kind where it's almost completely guitars and drums and about 1/10th of the store is for real instruments). It'll be a few dollars more there, but you'd at least have it.

For a similar price, I'd also take a look at the Luyben ligature. Also available at wwbw.

What I didn't like about them, is they streched after a short time (less than two years), and also I could almost never take the mouthpiece off the clarinet without the ligature and reed sliding. I can get the sound that I want with metal ligatures just as much as with soft ligatures, so my reasons are just convinience.

For my taste the Rovner is way better than the Vandoren Leather, which personally I really hated. Yes, it looks the business, but the ED models are extraordinarily good. I use the ED mark 1 - they are hard to find but come up every now and again on ebay, and are worth every penny/cent.

clarnibass -

Well, my Rovner started way too small, so much so that the screw bit into the back of the mouthpiece. After nearly 10 years it's about right now :-D

As for taking the mouthpiece off - I ALWAYS remove the reed. This because I like the back face of the reed to be damp where it attaches to the mouthpiece.

Minority report? I thoroughly dislike leather ligatures, ever since I got my first (free) Rovner some 30 years ago. I feel that they have the tendency to "deaden" the sound, reduce the carrying power, and sabotage the efficiency of your sound-producing apparatus. (Furthermore--they're ugly!)

I currently have only one student who I have allowed to keep using his leather ligature (a BG, by the way); his sound is so overly-bright with a conventional metal ligature that the BG is the last resort. I analogize that using a l.l. is sort of like having a car with too much pickup, so that you feel you have to drive with your foot on the brake all of the time. Better to fix the problem w/mouthpiece, reed choice, embouchure/support, barrel etc.
Having a "dark" sound should not mean sacrificing the brilliance that gave the "clarinet" its name!

I absolutely love the vandoren Klassik, I don't know why no one else uses them (other than the $). IMHO they are way better than anything BG or Rovner makes. It really does not deaden the sound (which I agree is true with leather and Rovner ligatures in particular). It has slightly slower response and less penatrating tone than metal ligs (which I like) and adds a bunch of resonance and darkness to the sound. It (unlike the pyne string lig) has running knots so its pretty adjustable and doesn't slide around at all. Although I have also made ligatures out of electric tape and shoestrings that very honestly worked better than the standard Rovner and BG models.

Larry I'm with you: the Vandoren leather thing kills the sound, and consigns resonance to the dustbin. Minority of 2? Oooh, sounds like the build up to Iraq...

well the vandoren leather is already on order and will arrive sometime next week--ther'es still the 45 day return policy in case i want to try another--

well, since many of you are giving the thumbs down to the vandoren, should i still try a rovner? or steer away completely from nonmetal ligs?

Here's the best advice I can give you on ligatures... TRY THEM!

What works best for someone else's mouthpiece/reed/instrument/embouchure/airsream/taste/etc. might just not work for you. Advice for this kind of thing on a forum like this is meaningless.

As Liquorice says, it depends. I like the Rover 1R-ED because it lets the reed vibrate, allows for a resonant sound, and is flexible enough to choose how loose or tight you want it.
The reason I don't like the Vandoren is that the leather is really stiff, and somehow the sound appears to be knocked back a little with it, at least when I play.
What is duff for me maybe great for you though.

well i just got the vandoren lig a few days ago, and i can see what you mean bout some of the cons. though, after some use, it seemed to be going away--is it possible that there's a break in period? loosen the leather or something?

Not that I found, but everyone's different. The leather is so thick it remains very rigid over time. To retain the reed on the lig securely requires too much tension IMO.
