ok so im doing a challenge in school for band ranking. i got challenged by an all state trumpet. i have to play the scale G 3octaves(along with others). i need to know what would be the best fingering to get the high g to come out cleanly. right now im just using 1x3 xx3. i tried using that with the Eb key but its hard for me to play it. what do you guys suggest?

A quick and dirty fingering that's relatively out of tune is oxo ooo with the right pinky Eb and either the left Eb/Bb fork or the corresponding RH side key. That is, play the (somewhat out of tune) F# and go up a half step.

There are more than 20 ways to play G6.

Your choice of a particular fingering depends on many factors: pitch, response, fullness of sound, awkwardness of fingering in a passage and the notes which preceed and follow it. All of these factors must be considered.

One fingering does not fit all applications...GBK

But if you're fingering a fast three octave run? Do you use more than one fingering for that?

Half the trick is "getting there." So............. C as usual, open D (everyone yell at me at once!!), E with thumb/register/2nd/3rd, F# removing the 3rd, G just adding the lowest side key.

You can play G scale so fast this way, that trumpet player won't know what hit him!

Well open D for me is more like a C double sharp, very flat! So flat thati n a fast scale you can hear it. Get used to fingering normal D it isn't hard.

You miss my point. I mean when you are playing ....................

VERY FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also I would suggest that those of us who don't practice an "open D" with some amount of regularity will find it harder to achieve with a good sound and good pitch. I add the last two sidekeys for sustained events, even prefering this sound over the regular D when matching the resistance and timbre of the surrounding notes - on some occasions.

The sad truth to the clarinet is that we often have to produce the greatest amount of notes in the shortest amount of time in a similar manner to the flute. If we were to obsess with the absolute correctness of pitch in many "flying passages," there would be no "flying passages."

P.S. Didn't Bonade mean "squeezing" BEFORE you lift your fingers......

oops, wrong thread !!!!
