 Reed Suggestion?
Author: bcl1dso

I have an Eb part coming up and I am getting an R-13 Eb, with a pyne mouthpiece. What would be your suggestion as to what reeds i should use. I normally play on a V-12 3. Thanks

Consider lopping Bb reeds with which you're familiar and if you are adept at using eg the ATG system you may be able to utilise some of your normal stock, rather than purchasing Eb reeds. See recent short thread on "Eb mouthpiece/reed match up" on this page.

Interesting... I usually just cut the bottom off a Bb V12 4 reed and use it on my Eb... but recently I bought a box of Vandored 4 Eb Reeds and they seem to work the same (no better, no worse). Does the smaller size of the reed actually matter at all?

I must ask, because I've often heard that advice... How do you cut it off? Scissors? Knife? Saw?

I cut mine with an electrical wire snipper (the flat headed crimper style)

For cutting off the bottom of Bb clarinet reeds, I use X-Acto saw blade Number 234, which works perfectly:

A small coping saw will also work just fine...GBK

Hello,

I used to rubber band about 20-30 reeds together, then use my 12" sliding miter saw. Overkill? Probably, but it was the best cut I ever got.

Now, Allan Segal made me a barrel which plays incredibly and I had him take material away from the top of the barrel, so a b-flat reed fits as is. For my work e-flat (the one I play outdoors), I just took the metal ring off of the barrel and achieved the same result.
