Since I am on spring break this week and am very bored, I thought I would start a message and ask everyone what their favorite piece is composed for clarinet.

when I'm happy: Mozart concerto
when I'm depressed: either Brahms quintet or trio
when I'm angry: solo sections from Bartok Miraculous Mandarin
when I'm in a generally weird mood: Stravinsky three pieces....

Weber Concerto #2 is fabulous when played by Charles Neidich, But I enjoy hacking at it.

Mendessohn-Bartholdy, Sonata for Clarinet and
Bernard Crusell’s "3 Duos" are currently my favorites.

The clarinet has played by jazz, blues, pops, country and everything else under the sun. It is amazing that everyone so far is a high brow. As for this low brow i would pick anything from the Phantom of the Opera.
Be happy and enjoy what every music you love. That is the beauty of the Clarinet it doesn/t really care.
peace

I thought I'd be weird and say the Artie Shaw Concerto, but someone already mentioned it. Oh well.

Right on Bob! I like Pete Fountain, Benny "G", and Arty. Just wish my old fingers worked better.

I enjoy the Mozart Concerto as well, but also have fun with some jazz or popular showtunes sometimes.

Mark, you are one of the only ones who hasn't responded! Just out of curiousity, what is your favorite piece?

After posting that last message, I realized that I hadn't responded either. My favorite piece is the Poulenc Sonata for two clarinets, which isn't bitonal(Search under Poulenc Sonata and look at the argument that Doug and I had back and forth on that one-He won) and the Copland Clarinet Concerto.

Well, there was this other thread on tacky pieces ...

One of my very favorites, which has nothing to with classical or whatever, is Artie Shaw's rendition of the old warhorse "Besame Mucho". He plays it the way I would if I had the skill ... which makes it one of my favorites :^)

There's other pieces I like that are musically better or harder technically or the player has better tone or - well, you name it - but Artie could make a trite piece sound fresh.

I was beginning to think that no one listens to jazz. (I love classical, too, though)

I wouldn't say it's written for clarinet, but I really like Benny Goodman's rendion of Sing, Sing, Sing! I also like Caravan, which doesn't have a clarinet part, but if you give the clarinet the tenor sax I part, it is just the coolest sound.
