Vaguely on the same subject, there was a truly abominable TV programme last week about Tony Blair's early career (such as it was) as a rock guitarist. Perhaps he and Greenspan and Clinton will get together one day to relive their boyhood dreams.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Allan, that's funny.

It's really amazing how many famous people play or played the clarinet. Greenspan. Wow. Picture that. No, don't:).

John Corigliano played Clarinet till it was stolen from his high school locker.

His dad was Concertmaster of the New York Phil. so I wonder why he didn't replace it...........? ;)

Hey, slightly more on topic but not really, I heard a bit on NPR this morning with composer Robert Pound of Dickinson College. He heard Greenspan use the phrase "irrational exuberance" with respect to the high tech stock boom when he first took office. Naturally this suggested a song. Pound wrote a five movement work of that name. The snippets played on the radio this a.m. suggest this is a very worthy work.

..............Paul Aviles

...............I bet he never payed $650 for a mouthpiece - smart man.

A friend of mine from Germany sez this about Greenspan:

"Well, he couldn't've been too bad - he went to Juilliard. Later he played with an east coast sweet/swing band, the Henry Jerome Orchestra in the mid 40's, I think. They played cruise ships, hotels, that sort of thing. The band must have been pretty decent because it's arranger was Johnny Mandel, Al Haig was on piano, and 'Tiny' Kahn was the band's drummer.

It pays to keep your old band mates as chums. In the same section as Greenspan was Leonard Garment, who eventually became Richard "I'm not a crook" Nixon's personal attorney and who then recommended Greenspan to work in the government."

The list of famous people who played clarinet is modest; one could conclude that those who want to become famous should avoid playing the clarinet :)

According to a news article I saw last week, he decided to forgo his music career, in part, because after going to Juilliard, he was playing in a dance band (tenor and clarinet) and the other tenor player was Stan Getz.
