My poor Buffet

Ok, I noticed small surface cracks in the bore of my top joint of my R-13. What's up with that? What do I do? Can it be fixed before it goes straight through? My teacher told me to stay away from bore oils. And it looks like it's dry. It's only 3 years old... I'm really sad. :'(

Maybe they can put a metal ring on the top of the joint. This may stop it from spreading and give it more support.

IMHO, it would be wise to take this clarinet to the best technician in your area, right away. Don't wait to see what will happen, because what happens might be a major crack that a technician could have prevented.

When the bore of the clarinet gets very dry it can get what we call "lateral" cracks. These cracks usually open up along the grain direction. I would suggest that bore oil is indeed in order here or you could have some serious troubles ahead. Almond oil is very good and touted on the BB. I have also used pressed apricot oil with very good results. These cracks can close if the wood is treated properly and in time.

I don't know why your instructor is against oiling, but I firmly believe that it is necessary.
