I am a beginning student of clarinet and I would like to know what is the lowest note that an A clarinet can make. The Bb clarinet's lowest note is E and when transcribed to concert pitch is D.
Thanks

The A is pitched a half-tone lower than the the Bb - lowest note is E sounding a concert Db.

But there are Bb Clarinets that have a low Eb key on them-just to make it possible to transpose from A to Bb completely.

That was/is common in Italy - players owned one clarinet and transposed like crazy.
Personally, I think buying another clarinet is preferable to the stress involved in sight-transposing with an Italian conductor listening :^)

Elke - Read the thread and posts below under "Bb Clarinet" to get a better idea of differences among the soprano clarinets, also all of our "good books" with Clarinet in the titles [available from Sneezy sponsors] describe the tonal and playing characteristics of modern insts. Don

And the Italian literature is not known for having lots of sustained notes to sit and think about Although, fortunately, most of the Rossini overatures are very scalar.
Still, I agree, the benefits gained from owning an actual A clarinet FAR outweigh the costs.
