As I was perusing some magazines I ran across an issue that listed the top universities as far as academics go and that got me to thinking, out of the top conservatories in the U.S. in which order would you list them based on their clarinet studies area? Understanding that this is strictly based on opinion, there is no right or wrong answer, I'm merely interested in seeing how our opinions differ or find common ground. I can only think of a couple of conservatories and from those I have no idea which would be placed over which, maybe the forum can help.

Arizona State University, University of Southern California, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and Eastman and Juilliard have highly ranked programs. People might disagree with me though!

And that's just the USA. How about outside the USA?

can't really say...it depends more on you than the istitution...if you're at the the US World and News top clarinet school (heck, they make useless ratings, imho, of undergrad and grad school programs, why not clarinet programs?), and you can't get along with the teachers, have no ensemble opportunities that you like, and see a limited potential for growth, its not too good for you???
You have to check out the places that interest you and then make a gut decision, and then realize that you're not locked into it....our propensity to make lists imho limits our creative thought....

3. Will issue faster tongue if needed to play Mendelsohn Midsummer's Night Scherzo
2. Has Alexander Technique department that has been expanded to massage therapy operation (on contract with a place near rush street)

If you want to make a living playing the clarinet in a good, stable orchestra, you go study with the ORCHESTRAL performer that you admire most and that has a good record of placement. From behind the screen at an audition, it doesn't matter what institution you are from - if any. I would have walked to outer Slobovia (every lesson!)to have had the chance to enter Robert Marcellus' freshman class at Northwestern University. (Fortunately all I had to do was fly from Northern California - and pay tuition that ended up looking like a second mortgage.)
