Hi,
I have a minidisc and instead of continually using the mic that comes with it (that really small one), i want to buy a different really suitable one for recording instrumental music. Preferably something not too big, as I'd be transporting it around with my MD.

The Sony ECM-MS907 is a good choice to pair with a minidisc player. The sound is fairly good, it's reasonably priced, and it's very portable. It's great to use as a practice tool. While I was in college, many people recorded recitals with them also with fairly good results.

The Sony ECM-MS907 is good, and if you don't mind bigger and more expensive, the ECM-MS957 is even better. For your purposes the MS907 sounds like the way to go.

If you have a recent Macintosh Powerbook, you might want to try the microphone built into the computer! I just made a recording for a music festival with the built in microphone and Garage Band, and it sounds as good as some pros I've paid to record concerts in the past. Yes, a really nice mic. would probably sound better, but the sterio mic. built into my Mac was surprisingly very good! It would still help to have a nice place to record: church, recital hall, etc., for the overal sound, and when it sounds nice to begin with where you're at, it's much more fun to make a recording, too.

Hi,
What mini-disc recorder are you using? It would seem that the Sony MZ-RH10 or the Sony MZ MZ-M100 look like the way to go for what I need to do. Paired with this mic, it is a bargain setup that should do very well.

Hi Nic,
I may go with one of the two I mentioned as a couple of reviews indicated that there were some limitations in file conversions on the NH700.
Which ever way I go, this will be a quantum leap for me in recording.

Try using 2 microphones one on the end, and one in front.

The Rode NT4 is an excellent stereo mic which comes with the necessary adapters to use with a minidisc recorder. I've gotten some really good recordings of chamber groups and bands with this, and you only need one mic stand to set it up. It's got two heads preconfigured in one mic body. Runs on 9V or phantom power.
