Okay....my students have a solo and ensemble competition this weekend. I just found out that the judge is the clarinet teacher that was just fired from my university. He only taught one semester and basically we had the chair fire him because he wasn't teaching us anything. The question I have is....Should I go in the room with my kids? I'm afraid that he might lower their score b/c of me. ???

I have never seen the teachers go in to an S & E competition in our state (MI).

I'd suggest staying out of the room, but more for the experience that it will provide your students: they need to be able to play well and overcome jitters without you being there, because you won't always be. However, you can still provide support to all of them by waiting with them outside before and meeting with them after. I hope it goes well for all of you.

I have never seen a teacher come in the room with students in my state either. (TX)

Just about every teacher comes in with their kids here.... I never played without my private teacher being there. I am however leaning towards not going in. Thanks

Personally, I think it's a good idea not to go in.
Being in the warmup room or available in a public area would be nice, though, especially for the first timers.

Sorry to be contrary but if is going to help your first timers by being in there, then I think you should be. I know it is not the same as State competitions but all the local music teachers attend our regional Eisteddfod the give encouragement to their students and I think it helps soothe a few of those last minute jitters. I know they will eventaully have to perform without your being there but if you can I don't see the harm in it. It's just my opinion but I think you should give them all the support you can.

From the other comments it sounds like the way we do solo and ensemble is very different. Here parents, family, teachers, friends, and at times strangers come into the room and listen. There are seats set up for them.
My senior year in h.s my mom, grandparents, lesson teacher, ex-lesson teacher, were all in there along with the girl who played before me, her parents, and grandparents.
I think what I'll do is explain to the kids' parents individualy and see what they want.....or I'll just ask the kids.
