 Tale of the Pads

Had the Buffet R-13 in the shop for evaluation---had difficulty with the alternate Bb (XOO/XOO) fingering---the problem persisted after adjustment of the bridge key and the pads on upper/lower joints. Finally, after the tech suggested replacement of two of the upper joint pads---the problem is essentially gone. He showed me the "bevel" on the higher quality replacement pads that help the pads to seal better---apparently the Buffet pads lack this. Is this a common problem; should all pads be replaced?

Factory Buffet pads are beveled, so I can't speak to your question. Perhaps the "step" of the bevel was different in the replacement pad. Pads come in different thickness and style, but as long as they don't leak there is not any need to change them.
