One of the wooden cases Chinese instruments (and there are plenty of them around!) come in is a good small size (probably the only reason to buy one, use the case for your clarinet and turn the clarinet-type-thing that came with the case into an ornament). Either that or a Yamaha plastic case - they're pretty compact.

I have a Yamaha plastic case. My Leblanc won't fit into it; the bell is too large.

No doubt the case could be altered, but try before you buy.

The polystyrene liner can be persuaded to fit - just squeeze the polystyrene to enlarge a section.

Is it the bell diameter on your Leblanc that's too large or the height of the bell?

My LL full Boehm fits in my altered Yamaha double case (made to fit the long bottom joints and the low Eb touch - the rest go in nicely), bell and all, but the bottom joint is a litle bit shorter than a Selmer Series 9 full Boehm.

Chris - from memory (don't have the Yamaha case here) the problem is the diameter at the wide end of the bell. The case is only just deep enough for the Yamaha bell; I'm not sure there's enough polystyrene to squeeze.

Try "Gator" cases. I had one and it was quite small.

I bought a couple of Durbin cases from Ben Redwine (Gennusa mouthpieces), he's a sponsor of the bboard. I'm extremely impressed with them. They are high-quality and fit my instrument (Opus II) snugly. One is rather large with lots of room for everything, and the other is small and compact--smaller than a pro-tec case. You could send him an email and ask if he still has some. I think he was closing out his stock.

The case my '30's Selmer Paris metal clarinet came in was the smallest case I've ever seen.

I wonder why they aren't used anymore? Does anyone make a case like this anymore?

I think the Yamaha Custom single case is like the old Selmer case in size and shape - it's not much deeper than an oboe case except where the bell goes, and has a fake leather case cover as well.

The Selmer Signature case is slim, but knowing Selmer, it's probably mega-expensive as well.

My Series 9 full Boehm A case is like that (in your photo), but it's knackered -- which is a shame. The Bb came with the ugly '70s Selmer case - and it stinks as well.

The smallest case I have seen where the clarinet is all in bits is the Traypack case - and it slots into an alto sax case compartment. Didn't Yamaha once make an alto sax/clarinet/flute combi case? I'm sure I've seen one but haven't seen the inside to see how it all fits.

Woodwind and brasswind sells the small plastic Yamaha case, as well as some other small cases.

I do recommend the wood shell case that Chinese instruments come in - they're very sturdy and I imagine these can be bought for peanuts. I'm using one with my old N-series Centered Tone or plastic Yamaha as the Selmer single case (the brown one from the '80s) I used to use is on the large side, and the polystyrene insert has all crumbled, and the old plastic Yamaha 24 case with integral handle is massive.

It's pretty much like the Yamaha case but in black vinyl covered wood (and completely rectangular with metal corner protectors - not tapering in at the front like the Yamaha), and no, it doesn't smell of mothballs!

Ok, Chris, it doesn't smell of mothballs, but does the glue smell? This is an honest question, since a violinist friend of mine bought a cheap backpack case for a trip to Europe a year or 2 ago, and it smells AWFUL, due to the glue used...

The one I have has practically no smell at all - if anything it smells like a brand new Vito or Bundy case, but there's definitely no glue smell - and I have taken a good sniff and I'm still conscious!

It's very well made, very tough and the metal parts are well fitted, and the handle is a hard plastic one identical to the Yamaha one (but without Yamaha on it). And space inside for reeds, pullthrough, grease, etc.

I think the Jinyin (or any other name for the same thing) clarinets have these cases with them - the lid and base has white stitching on it, best you have a look (and smell) at one, I'm sure any music shop should have some of these knocking around.

I just received a fine Vito in the tiniest case I've ever seen. Apparently it is that one here: http://images.music123.com/products/full/MTS%20Products/79670.jpg and costs less than 30 dollars. Not much room for accessories though - a couple reeds, grease and swab, more won't fit in.

I don't know how much they are, but do try any woodwind specialist to see if they have any in stock - chances are someone that may have bought a Yamaha Custom Bb may also have ditched the original case in favour of a lightweight double case, or a pair was made up and the Bb case was abandoned and left in the stockroom collecting dust, and could be going for a good price.

I bought a Yamaha pro double case (the wooden one) for a fraction of the price of a new one as it was in a clearence sale from a well known UK specialists, and it's excellent. I wouldn't mind a single Custom case as well for my plastic Yamaha which I'm carrying out various keywork experiments/conversions on.

The Protec Pro Pak classic case is small and very good. Plus its very light although not much room for accesories.
