The 8 notes bassoon forum is pretty sad. I would avoid it if youre looking for help with actually playing the bassoon.

The International Double Reed Society has a web forum, but I think you need to join (i.e. pay) in order to use it.

I've searched everywhere for info on French bassoons - is this the most secret instrument there is or what? I can find absolutely NOTHING about them!
At least there's a fingering chart that covers both systems and sizes:

And that's about it - I just want some basic info on crooks and reeds for them.

Chris P - there is some info in Baines's book.
I think they are still made to order by Selmer and maybe Buffet.
Beyond that, you need to turn to French websites:
http://www.foudebasson.com (literally "madman of bassoon", but it's a pun of sorts: a "fou de bassan" is the large seabird we know as a gannet).
http://www.bassons.com which may be more serious but isn't responding right now.

I have library-borrowed "The Oboe and Bassoon" [English trans. from German] by Gunther Joppig, but don't know how much description of the French bsn he gives, otherwise its a fine book. Somewhere I've read of the Fr Bsn, will try to "dig" it out" and report. I'd also suggest looking in Sachs, History of Musical insts. Don

Sachs didn't have anything of note, BUT my Larousse Ency. of Music on pg 256 has a sentence speaking of tonal diffs from the Ger bsn AND a pic of a ?modern? French bsn, however not being a "buffoonist" I couldn't find the differences. Try a Google-net search, it might be helpful. Don

BassetHorn, you need look no farther than the search function on this very site! Just click on the word "search" at the top of this board, then select the Doublereed Mailing list archives. With the search term "french bassoon," I got many, many hits.
If you want to ask the question yourself, you can subscribe to Doublereed-L, which is operated off the same server as the Clarinet Board and is free. <doublereed-subscribe@woodwind.org>
If you can phrase your question succinctly, I will be glad to ask it for you on the IDRS list, or I will ask my teacher (who is a bassoonist).
The IDRS list is full of extremely knowledgeable double reeders, and I have found it to be a good double reed counterpart to this site.
