 Brannenized?
Author: Hiroshi

Reading the new International Musical Suppliers catalogue,I found Gregory Smith started to customize Buffet clarinets especially R-13.
What I could not understand was the wording 'brannenized'. What does this mean?

By the wording Brannenized means that you purchase a new clarinet from the International Music Suppliers, then they ship it to Bill Brannen in Evanston, IL. He does his custom modifications to it. Plus, you get a new Greg Smith mp with the new clarinet that has been worked on by Brannen. I believe this is how it works. Trust me when I say that both the Brannen process and new Greg Smith mp is WELL worth the extra money. I had an old R-13 overhauled by Brannen and it's mechanisms are now by far better than almost any new clarinets I have seen. Greg Smith as far as I know does not do any modifications to the R-13 itself. Oh, I think they also throw in a Chadash barrel picked out by Greg Smith to complement the mp.

Actually Brandon and Hiroshi I try many Buffet clarinets (sometimes over an extended period of time) until I find one that matches the quality of my own that I play in the orchestra. After I select a Buffet Chadash barrel and three of my mouthpieces to go with the clarinet (the mouthpieces are returnable or exchangeable), the clarinet is then sent to the Brannens for their customization.

The objective is to make available an entire set up that is of the quality matching the instrument that I play in the orchestra.

I hope that this helps.

wow....I'd jump at the chance to get horns with this selection/customization pedigree....

though I wouldn't call it "smithing" a clarinet....an old 1950's science fiction story by Fritz Lieber about star colonization in the 22nd century involved the transference of a human consciousness into a chimpanzee body, so as to preserve the human body in deep freeze while the chimp body ran the spaceship over the years it took to get to alpha centauri....this was called "smithing"...furthermore, a driving technique taught in high school driver's ed is called the "smith system", which basically tells you not to hit anything....maybe we should just say, super clarinets can be obtained from Mr Greg Smith, line forms to the right.....

Mr. Smith, can I send my already purchased Buffet R-13 to you to get it "Brannenized" and custom fitted with your top quality mp and barrel or is this offer exclusively for the International Music Suppliers customers?

About how much would it cost to buy a new Brannenized R-13 clarinet? with silverplated keys?

It only applies to new Buffet instruments purchased through IMS.
But I would be happy to work with one privately Keil(sending mouthpieces and matching hand select Buffet Chadash barrels to try on your already Brannenized instrument).

How would I go about getting my clarinet Brannenized since I've already purchased it?

William Brannen Woodwinds is located in Evanston, Illinois. You can call them at 1.847.866.7576 on Tue, Thur, and Fri. 8:30AM - 4:30AM Central Time to set up an appointment via UPS. They are superb customizers and repairpersons of all woodwinds. Our entire clarinet section from the Chicago Symphony have been going to them for many years...and for that matter the previous generation of the Chicago Symphony clarinet section went to Bill Brannen for their work!

If you are thinking of having your instrument rebuilt I would highly recommend Bill Brannen. I recently had my R-13 from 1976 rebuilt and I cannot stress enough how much of a good job he does. Nothing that I could write would do justice to his work. He is one of a kind. Initially it may seem a bit expensive, but the work is second to none.

If you are talking about the Brannen process, you send it up and get it back within a week or week and a half. Mine was $500. It would be more around $400 or $425 if it is newer. It may sound expensive but if you are a serious music student it would be something to consider. I cannot stress enough what a difference it will make.

Thank you Greg for your detailed info. I am interested in Brannenizing for my clarinet,sop-sax,and flute. Confusing thing was there is a famous flute manufacturer called Brannen Cooper.
