 tuner/metronome
Author: RI mom

Hi,
I am considering purchasing a combination tuner /metronome for my 14 year old clarinetist as a gift. I am trying to decide between KORG TM 40 tuner/ metronome and the Sabine MT 9000 tuner /metronome. Or should I purchase a seperate tuner and metronome?? Any advice is greatly appreciated ! Barbara Barry

I just recieved the TM40 and love it. It may be large, but it gets the job done.

My Setup:
R13 Clarinet (Ridenour Lyrique as my backup/marching instrument)
Walter Grabner K11 mouthpiece
Rico Reserve 3.5's
Bonade ligature

I used a TM40 for the first time last week. My friend, who's in an elite group loves his and I couldn't believe how cheap it was when he told me. A great feature for a unit that cheap is that it sounds the pitches (I believe).

I have a Sabine MT 9000 and it works great. But one problem is that, when using the metronome, it has gaps of 2, 3, 4, and maybe 6 beats. But they come in patterns. I noticed that when I'm on 120 bpm, and I want to bump it up to about 124 or so, it'll go to 126. But that's the only malfunction, in my opinion.
And you can pick the nuber of beats in a measure, and whether there are 8th notes, triplets, 16th notes, with various 8th note or 16th note rests, ect.
But, I also like the Korg tuners/metronomes. In my opinion, either one is a great by.

It's convenient to have both in one package, but I find it helpful to use both tools at the same time, especially when warming up. I think it's good to have a tuner that sounds chromatic pitches in addition to having a meter, and a separate, small metronome. I find that I use the metronome more often as a portable device than the tuner, and they usually sound A 440 if you are playing in an ensemble that needs to tune to the clarinet.

I have the two Korgs; and the combination is serviceable.

One nice thing about the Korg Metronome is that it can be set to emphasize the first beat of a pattern (e.g., 6/8). I often turn that off (when learning a new challenging piece) because when I err, it takes too long for the first beat to come around again.

The Korg metronome also has several rythms that can be selected. Those can be helpful.

I'm not sure which model but.....there is combination tuner/metronome that allows simultaneous use. eg. drone and metronome or meter and metronome.
