What pro player does your tone sound like?
Author: Clarinetgirl06
Date:   2006-01-01 22:26

I know we all sound like ourselves essentially, but which pro player would you say your tone sounds the most like?

If you are a pro, would you say you sound like any of the pros of the past?

I think my tone is like Paul Meyers.

This thread is just complete curiousity! I also know it's good to have a vast array of tones, and all that jazz. Just, who would you say your tone is close to? Or would you say your tone is sort of a mix of people?

Or, which player would we most like to emulate.

Not sure really, I go for the symphonic sound - a mixture of what I hear in the Berlin, Vienna, Budapest and St. Petersberg orchestras, throw a bit of Amsterdam Concertgebow, LSO, Philadelphia, etc. and I'm not as nearly as good as any of them!

But I can't pin it down to a particular player - there are too many good sounds I like. I won't mention any names just in case I leave someone out.

(though as far as sax players go, I can name the sounds I have in mind - on alto it'd be Pete King and tenor that'd be Michael Brecker. Still undecided on soprano and bari though, even though I do mostly bari sax playing.)

Sound like me, but that's somewhere between Anestopoulos and Yiaouzos.

I started with Jon Manasse, then made it better......

that's a fairly subjective comment though...... ;)

lol, we've got some nice comments here. Seriously, no one can pin down someone who they sort of sound like? lol.

I sound sort of like Paul Meyer, but I would like to add a splash of Manasse too.

It's not something one can be really objective about, another person is always better placed to make the observation.

Jon Manasse is my model, but what I create is all mine... many times unfortunately.

Very subjective issue. The way we perceive our sound and the way others hear us are quite different issues. I remember a discussion with a colleague regarding tone and how various Clarinet players sound. I stupidly asked her who she thought I sounded like (I was secretly hoping she would say a mixture of Leister, Tony Pay perhaps a little like Guy DePlus etc..). I was deflated when she said I sound just like a friend of mine. Nice sounding player but I was hoping for someone further up my imagined hierarchy.

Regards Chris.

Interesting;
It seems that over the years I've been asked to sound like:
Benny Goodman
Artie Shaw
Pete Fountain
Giora Feidman
Ricardo Morales
Jon Manasse
Reginald Kell
Harold Wright

and a talented amateur clarinetist.
All this, just to make a commercial spot or jingle work...boy was that fun!

Maybe the question should be who do I wish I sounded like... I would love to have the classic Harold Wright sort of sound, but with the ability to play with more power, especially in the upper register. I guess you could describe it as having a very tight center, a good solid core. I have had some interesting requests, since my job requires that I play a great deal of commercial music. I was recently asked to sound like what I consider to be nails on a blackboard...actually the conductor said feel free to use your worst reed... I had a chance to listen to the recording, and it sounds very much like a soprano saxophone. I thought it was interesting.

Kenny G

NOT!

Actually, my colleague in the local swing band did a Glen Miller tune; and my wife said that he really did sound like the Glen Miller clarinetist --but that I (HAHA) sound more like Benny Goodman.

In truth, I'm working on my sound; and its evolving rapidly. Folks familiar with my playing often look up shocked when I fire up the horn. They don't recognize me.

Chris N: What kinda sopo sax? That is one instrument that has more colors than a chameleon these days. From a harsh BopBop to a more sachrin than Kenny. My wanna-sound for soprano sax is Frank Weir from the '60s --Happy Wanderer, Shoemakers Shop --coloratura obligatto, wonderful

I probably sound somewhat like who ever I am trying to impersonate at the time but there are so many variables to actually determine who I most sound like such as type and brand of clarinet, my set up, weather, mood, etc, etc. I often will be concentrating on difficult technique and later my sound. Mostly myself I guess but Artie Shaw is who I would like to sound like.

I try to have as dark and full a tone as possible, but don't compare myself to anyone because I find it frustrating. I'd love to sound like Ricardo Morales, but will have to settle for sounding like myself.

For me, it's not so much the sound of any particular pro that I try to emulate, but rather the technical perfection and musical expression with which they play. If I could tongue like Robert Spring and play as beautifully as Larry Combs, Woody Allens sound (or anyones) would suite me just fine. So, I try to play "like" Robert and Larry and remain content to "sound" like me rather than Woody.

All I know is that when my former clarinet teacher (who was about 8 years younger than me out of college) would play, I would just sit there in awe of her sound. If I can sound anything close to how she sounded, I would be happy.

I did get a compliment from the 1st chair in the college Wind Ensemble where I perform. I performed the 2nd mvmt of Mozart's Clarinet concerto with the college Concert Band and he watch the performance. He said I had a nice sound. (I respect that comment from him since he is at a near professional level.) It made my day. I listen to the recording and I do hear many sweet sounds (among the rest of the sounds).

There are many people you can emulate but I think if you can develop your own sound that is enjoyable to listen to, then your sound is among the best. :-)

When everything is working just right I hear the voice of my teacher Randall Spicer saying "That sounds good Grant, just like me."
It doesn't happen often enough any more since I have so little time to practice but it does make me feel good when it happens. He sounded like Peter Simenauer (I hope I hope I spelled that right.)

Why would I want to sound like someone else?
Of course, I'd want to be able to play as technically skilled as a pro. I'm playing for the fun of it, not to become a clone of some big maestro.

Don't know, never listened to a pro with the same embouchure as me....
And if I did, I wouldn’t try to sound the same… but I would try to sound better!

I do try to sound like candy. My dark sound sounds likes chocolate, it’s sweet and dark brown…. and my lighter sound is like sugar, I can’t get enough from it..
