 Recording-mikes

I have seen several references to the mikes used for recording any specifics (brands, types, frequency response range, etc.) would be helpful. My current setup sounds awful (perhaps its the player and not the mike but hope springs eternal). Do you really need the two mike setup sold for use in bands and the recording industry. What about mike placement (ie - near -- far, etc.)
Thanks

I've been pretty happy with a Sony stereo mike with flip cartridge and 90/120 degree switchable spread. Inexpensive and easy to work with. Gives a reasonable stereo image when we've tried w/ clarinet & piano at about 12-15 feet. About $250 or so.
