how are you~
i'd like to get a new mouthepiece about during weeken
so, i want to know what kind of mouthpiece are you using.
i'm not judge the which one is better...something like that.
i just ask you to apply how's your mouthpiece works.
and does anyone using a Clarke W Fobes or Jewel mothpiece?
i'd like to know some info about that too.

Chicago Kaspar #14. Charles Bay (Ithica custom) and Greg Smith "Cicero Kaspar" models as alternates.
But my "bottom line" opinion is that most handmade products are good--you just have to find the "one" that works for you. Look for one that allows you to play expressively (soft to loud), one that retains its tonal focus in all registers and one that articulates cleanly. Don't worry so much about its "sound" as that is most dictated by your own internal mental concept of what is desirable.

I'm using a Pete Fountain crystal with (mainly) Zonda reeds between 3 meduim and 3.5 meduim. With this setup, I can play over a good dynamic range, I am secure from squeaks, and I get an even tone through all the registers. The reed is a big factor, though, as I found many other brands to sound very thin in the upper register, stuffy in the lower register, or even a combination of both! Still, I am very happy with my current setup, and I don't mind spending more on the Zondas because 4 out of the 5 are usually playable.

Greg Smith Kaspar Cicero on my Prestige for "serious" stuff (translation: nobody's sneaking booze onto the stage for a nip during the gig).
Vandoren M13 Lyre or Pomarico Emerald Mellow crystal on my Signet for outdoor "funsies" concerts (translation: the trumpets have pure grain alcohol in their Dasani bottles).
These setups work for me and may not work for you (translation: BYOB).

You must like the Pomarico though...After reading all the hype about the O'Briens, I'm interested in trying something new so that I can send it back if (when) it doesn't work for me!
FYI, I'm playing on a 20 year old Borbeck right now...but I occasionally use a B45dot or a 5JB...and I'm drinking ouzo.

I use the Hite Premier. I am a beginner, and this works well for me, is easy to blow, and has a nice tone. I'm told that even more experienced players like it. It's a very nice mouthpiece for around $20.

Selmer C85 120, Alto Selmer Soloist D, Tenor Soloist D or Stainless Steel Berg Larsen 115/1 M bullet and Soprano New York Meyer 5. I also use a Pomarico crystal, clarinet, on occassions. I moved to Selmer's on alto and tenor when my old pair of Meyer USA 6's started to wear out.

Gigliotti P, refaced by Dave Spiegelthal. Love it. I love the response, the ease of play, the tone, but what's good for the goose, in this case, may not be good for the gander. My mouthpiece has a very close tip and I play it with a softer reed (3.75) than what is recommended (4.5 - 5.0). But it works for me.

Before you buy, I posted on this a few days ago after dropping my old B45. The advice I read on previous posts was INVALUABLE, i.e. check as many mouthpieces as possible. I found a great combination (for myself) this way.
First attempt was M13, B45dot, Selmer C*, Pomarico sapphire (I think), and Pomarico diamond. This was all with an Optimum ligature. C* and crystal Pomaricos didn't seem any use. M13 was best with my Vandoren reeds, but I wasn't satisfied.
Few days later I tried the same thing with Mitchell Luries and produced the most satisfying sounds ever on the Pomarico mellow, with the C* a close second. A "blindfold" test with a colleague resulted in the same verdict.
My long-winded point is, do serious research and try different combos, and you've come to the right place for good, friendly and reliable advice.
The short answer is, a Pomarico diamond. Good luck.

Katrina (I believe part of your response was addressing me directly, so you shall not go ignored; if I'm wrong, you may tell me to hush!),
I do like the Pomarico, but my Signet plays so sharp that my M13L is seeing most of the outdoor duty (since it's op timized for 440 Hz). I may have been slightly better served with a more open crystal, but it still serves me well. IMO, Pomarico's comparison chart is off -- the Emerald Mellow is their most closed 'piece, and it's WAAAY closed, but the chart says it's more open than the M13L. Luckily I was trained on the Selmer HS*, and you can play Mozart on two pieces of wax paper after training on that thing.
My Greg Smith sees only indoor duty; for what it cost, I'm not about to risk it (or my Prestige) outside at the hot, humid and windy bayfro nt park where my summer band plays. Plus I don't want it to smell all boozy. ![[grin]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie5.gif)

As to your original question regarding Clark Fobes. Clark makes great mouthpieces. He is extremely knowledgeable about the acoustical properties and why think work the way they do. He is a great guy and easy to talk to as well. Give him a call and discuss with him what you are looking for. He can give you lots of help.

And I'm unfortunately unfamiliar with the Vandy M13's...what more can you tell me about those? And also I've never known a Selmer HS*...so how do these relate to, say, the B45's or 45dots? Or even the Borbeck 13's...I know I'm being demanding, but eh...it's the ouzo talking!

The M13 Lyre comes only in Profile 88, which is Vandoren's line of shallow beaked mouthpieces. The beak angle isn't as steep as standard mouthpieces, which (for me) helps out with articulation. It's a medium-close tip, and I'm used to a fairly closed piece, so it's a good setup for me. It also has very good response. It's tuned to 440 Hz and is designed especially for the R-13, but it works well with my Signet -- I have to pull the barrel out "only" about a quarter inch (!) whereas if I use a standard mouthpiece it almost slides off the tenon. I'm sure it's an even better choice for horns that aren't so sharp.
The HS* was my beginner mouthpiece, and it's waaay closed. The bite area is also very small, so it feel like you have a flattened soda straw in your mouth. Good news is it's an embouchure builder; bad news is it makes you work awfully hard. From my beginner days all the way until last summer it was the only mouthpiece I ever played. Then somebody lent me a used B45, and it was like discovering the wheel. The more-open tip and larger bite area gave me a flexibilty and response I'd never had before. I gave him $20 for it, played it for awhile, then got "gear fever" and went to the local music store to try out some more. That's when I got my M13L.
Still, none of them compare to the Greg Smith Kaspar Cicero. It's got the best combination of response, resonance and resistance I've ever had (mine may not be the best endorsement, though, considering my limited experience). It's easy to play but not TOO easy, and with practice you can pretty much get the kind of sound you want just by visualizing it. Best of all, altissimo notes pop out much more easily than ever before. In my local wind symphony I sit next to the clarinet professor at the local university who also plays a Greg Smith Cicero, and when I got it he was impressed at how much better my tuning and tone quality was. So it's the closest thing you may ever find to overnight improvement.
Anyway, if you're interested in the Pomarico, just anticipate them being more close-tipped than the chart indicates. And (as some other Pom users have confirmed) it may not slide all the way into your barrel socket. Mine sticks out just a bit on all my horns, even though inside it's flush with the bore. But if you're like me, you'll mostly be impressed by how cool it looks. Goes well with the ouzo!

I agree with the many favorable comments regarding the Cicero and Chedeville models by Gregory Smith. I own examples of both, but prefer the Cicero because it is closest to my own Chicago Kaspar. As far as I am concerned, unless you can find a good example of an original Chedeville or Kaspar (there are lots of "not so good" out there), Gregory Smiths mouthpieces are next best alternative available in custom products.

I was using a Pyne Poly-Crystal Mouthpiece and loved it. Though through wear i was due for a new one about 6 months ago, so i tried the Vandoren M13 - Prolife 88, and love it just as well. I have recommended both to friends as well and they liked both. But right now id say im all about the M15.

The first mouthpiece I bought was the Vandoren 5RV Lyre and it was great for me as a beginner. However, I'm now using the Eddie Daniels mouthpiece that came with my clarinet, and it feels so much smoother (not so much hissing, if any). Intonation is better, too. I use the Optimum and Mitchell Lurie reeds.
By the way, does anyone know the facing of the Eddie Daniels? How does it compare to the 5RVL? It doesn't seem to be in any of the websites I've been to.

When I first started using the crystal mpc, I did find it to be unusually heavy, but over time I've gotten used to it. Now when I even pick up a hard rubber mpc, it feels incredibly light to me! I haven't experienced any negative effects from the extra weight of the crystal, and I now prefer it when playing sitting down.

Hi,
I must be the only person in the world that uses a Portnoy BP02 and a Stowell, Wells, Schneider 2. The #3 is a Buffet Ched C Crown. I see I am the only person to mention any of these. Oh well, That's what works for me and I have tried many VDs with absolutley no luck. Older Selmers like HS**, D, etc. are somewhat OK and would probably work in a pinch.

I occasionally use a Portnoy BP02, so Hank is not alone. However, I find it more suitable for jazz, which I don't much play. For normal use (not that there's anything "abnormal" about jazz) I prefer the J & D Hite "D." Like a lot of folks, I have a drawer full of other mouthpieces, but I forget what they are.

So there are a couple of others out there using the BP02; I am not alone! I do play band and jazz exclusively (with a little bit of small chamber ensemble) which might be a primary reason for the Portnoy usage.
The sound, combined with a Series 9 or a Leblanc Dynamic 2, is quite large.

No one has yet mentioned the Grabner mouthpieces! The best mouthpiece i have found is Walter's AW model. I like the Hite mouthpieces really well, and played on Ralph Morgan's pieces with some success before that, but the Grabner is what does it for me.

Has anyone tried the Glotin Chedeville mouthpieces? How close are they to the original H. Chedeville's from the 30's. Which facing would you recommend
if you like to use Vandoren V12 4's? How would you compare the Glotin Ched to the Vandoren M15 or M13Lyre. Are there other makers of "Ched" copies that you prefer.

I use my own. But in my limited experience with other folks' hand-made mouthpieces, I've found Clark Fobes' to be generally excellent. For what it's worth, I've played some older Kaspars and Chedevilles that were nothing special (which is probably why they were sent to me for refacing in the first place!).

From comtemporary makers I really like my Pyne signature bc, my Richard Hawkens performs well, too. As for the "vintage" makes I was lucky (and astouned!) to find with an older set of Buffets I purchased a Kasper 13 and 11 along with a hard rubber Bettony. The 11 works wonders with my R13 A, the Bettony is pretty awsome as well. But... believe it if you dare, my favorite vintage is a Bob Mario Classic Curve Ched blank. I can get several mps to sound well with my newer instruments, but I'd been looking for a very long time for something to bring my beautiful '36 Conn 464 (maybe you remember it Dave S.) to life - and I have to say I've never had a mp make a bigger difference on a single instrument than the Mario did for my Conn. What a joy to play it is now. The only other one of these mps I've ever seen sold on ebay a few weeks ago - really wanted to snag it but didn't make it on time. If one of you out there picked it up I'd like to know what you think.

I like fairly open mouthpieces for the swing/pop/jazz music I play:
Portnoy BP03
Vandoren B45
Vandoren 5JB (use sometimes)
..... and put to ' rest ' a couple mpcs that that don't work for me at all. I am still in the naive phase of thinking that ' another ' mouthpece will help my sound.
I noticed a few comments on the Grabner CXZ_JAZZ. What specifically do you like about them in comparison to the ones I have mentioned ? (I play a Leblanc LL and Selmer Series 9).

Very interesting to read all of these, and I think I have played most. I must stress that the Fobes Debut is not only a great mouthpiuece, but it is almost free (29.95) I find the Richard Hawkins to be a fine personal mouthpiece, and very correct for tuning as well. Yes, but I also play M13 which is a bit brighter, but a lovely sounding mouthpiece, played well on OPus even better on 10s. I very much respect those who say it is a personal choice. Unless you buy a Buffet with a mouthpiece in the box, almost anything will do. (There should be a slip in that Buffet mouthpiece which says, "throw out", or "do not play", like the silicone that comes in pill bottles).
Some of the mouthpieces that come with horns play quite beautifully though, even had a Yamaha 4C that was just fine. Yes, it is a matter of choice.

I use the Fobes 4L. I have tried numerous others, some sounded a little darker and more focused, but none compared with how easy this one blows. It is slightly brighter than the others.
I have tried, Grabner, Smith, Lomax to name the best. All were terrific, but for my style and horn, the Leblanc LL this one is the winner. I also like vandoran 21/2 to # 3 reeds and the 4L is very reed friendly. The other mouthpieces like a firmer reed and they were to resistant for me.

I have the Pomarico Emerald M model mouthpiece for Bb soprano clarinet. I had a Rovner Dark ligature, but while I was at a football game, my good concert horn was in the band room, in it's two cases (I have a Protec case cover), and someone took my beloved Rovner from me. So I was using an inverted Bonade for a while, until I finally got my hands on the Vandorne Optimum.)..I love it the Emerald M... I used to play on a Hite Premier (my favorite of all of the plastic/hard rubber mouthpieces). I loved that Premier...no mouthpiece is made the same, and I was letting a friend look at it one day, and I got it back with a big chunk out of the tip. So I had to get a new mouthpiece in a hurry, because I had All-Region auditions that Saturday..so I wasn't quite used to my new Pomarico by the auditions. But it's served me very well.
I've played on a Hite Premier (two of them), and original Hite mouthpiece, the Hite D model, the Vandoren B45 (no offense to any of you that love that mouthpiece, but it just wasn't for me), some Slemer's (I've forgotten which ones), The Pomaricos, Gigliotti #4 facing (I didn't like that one at all, too much resistance, and too open of a tip, and that's my fault)..and many others that I can't remember anymore. (Probably too many to remember, actually)
I am using the Emerald M now. (I do believe the tip openning is 1.09 mm) and I'm using a V12 4 on it...and I was wondering what everyone thinks of the Eddie Daniels mouthpiece. I know Eddie Daniels uses a V12 4 on it, so it must have a closed tip, and the curve length is probably short, right? I need to get a new mouthpiece, because I did get another Hite Premier, but it just isn't the same as my first one, very despressing. I need to get a new mouthpiece because of a couple of Honor Bands coming up, and I've heard horror stories about crystal mouthpieces and their fatal deaths at Honor Band clinics (Just for a back-up). I'm first chair at one of these Honor Bands, and the last thing I need is my favorite mouthpiece destroyed there (or at either clinic).
But does the ED mouthpiece work ESPECIALLY for ONLY Leblanc clarinets, or will it work on my R-13? Will intonation patterns go haywire if I purchase the ED mouthpiece made by Leblanc, and use it on a Buffet Clarinet?
Or, what do other people think of this mouthpiece?
This is also my first post on here. I'm only a freshman in High School.

The Vandoren B46 is my preferred mouthpiece. It has a full sound and has great tone in every register. I play Mithcell Lurie 3.5s and use a Harrison A2 ligature. My most frequently played horn is currently a Leblanc Dynamic 2.

Hello, this is my first post here....
I currently use a Pomerico Crystal Mouthpiece- Sipphire M (however, I have not yet had it long enough to break it in). Before this, I used a Vandoren B45.
EDIT: I decided the Sipphire M was too open, it is being replaced by a Ruby M

Personally, I am interested to know:
a) how many of the original posters in 2003 and 2004 have changed their mouthpieces since then;
b) how many different mouthpieces the original posters have tried since their original posts.
I am betting that less than half of the original posters are still using the same mouthpiece 1-2 years later and that most have tried at least 3 or 4 alternatives in the ensuing year(s).

With a Kohlert full Boehm Bb and Leblanc Symphonie 3 in A, (my main instruments) the one I play most is a Vandoren M-15. Overall, it's the most even through the registers, goes easily into altissimo, has good intonation and nice tone. The Leblanc played well with lots of different mouthpieces, until it needed an overhaul. (Should be back any day now, I can't wait!). The Kohlert is more picky. Ligature is a Luyben.
For the Noblet Eb, my favorite is a David Spiegelthal reface, followed closely by my own first refacing attempt on a Vandoren B-44. The B-44 was absolutely awful, so it would have been no loss if I screwed it up. Both of these are fairly close facings and play 3-3.5 White Master reeds as if they were 2s. Ligature is an old metal Vandoren inverted.
Once Christmas is paid off, I'm planning to upgrade to a Grabner of Fobes for the Bb.

Clarinetgirl09 asked about the Eddie Daniels mouthpiece. My experience is that it's an excellent mouthpiece, better than Vandoren B45 which is also a very good mp, and what I used before. I don't think the ED mp is for Leblanc clarinets only. My teacher plays Buffet R13 clarinets, tried my ED mp, and was absolutely amazed at how good it is.

Making mouthpieces directly and exclusively for the clarinetist does not involve a distributor or retailer. This allows one to control the quality and selection of mouthpieces made available to individuals on a personal basis. The only visibility given to my mouthpieces other than through those that play them are my personal website and this website.
Having said that, there are many clarinetists in the UK, presently or recently, playing my mouthpiece. There isn't the "brick and mortar" store-displayed presence of the mass marketed pieces that acquaint many with what is commonly available. I've observed, as in Frank Kaspar's case, that one to one contact with clarinetists produces the most desireable result.
I personally play my own Chedeville style, #1 facing with 3.5 - 4 V12 reeds in the CSO. Outside of the orchestra, I play the Kaspar Chicago style in either hard rubber or Cocus hardwood.

I play a Clark Fobes CF+ with 3.5 Gonzalez reeds. I love the ability to articulate fast high note runs without machine-gun spaces coming out in the phrase (I have a heavy tongue up there). I play this set-up with a chadash barrel on a Buffet Bb Tosca.

I dug out my Woodwind Rob't Marcellus and use a Rovner "light" ligature with it and either V.D.s or Spanish reeds. BIG sound! And pretty even throughout. Great for jazz, Bach and Handel. Even sounds good with the Rovner "dark" ligature. Using Duco Household cement, I glued a very thin cork strip on the inside of the ligature the full length of the lig. and as wide as a reed. The chalameau register actually became brighter.
I don't know why that Marcellus MP plays so free and so dark unless it's that the palatte opens up into a really large chamber. It's probably the heaviest MP I own.

I used to use an old Marcellus (mid 70's) that was absolutely fabulous. I tried others that were no where near as good. Later, I played some Borbeck's for a while (real ones, faced by Borbeck, not the "stock" ones - I got them from Walter Wollwage, my teacher from the CSO) One of them was a real gem - I cried when it got broken in college. The closest I came to that Borbeck was a couple of Hawkins mouthpieces, and an old Selmer that Richard Hawkins refaced for me (he used to come to our school when he was still at Michigan and reface our mouthieces for $5.00!). I enjoyed it subtlety, but never could get as much air through it as I wanted. Just 2 months ago, I tried a Backun/Morales and absolutely fell in love with one of them - the Orquestra model - the other 2 were very similar to my Hawkins. I know there are many naysayers about the expensive mouthpiece phenomenon, but I'm telling you - it has opened up my sound a TON. Even if it's inaudible to someone else (I don't think it is), it's such a joy to play that I don't care. So now I am:
Backun / Morales mouthpiece
Grand Concert Thick Blank 4.0
Bay gold / Vandoren "Klassic" (mostly string - fabulous!) I love them both equally for different reasons. Bay = clean articulation, immediate sound, lots of sparkle. Vandoren = dark, full robust sound - can get louder.

I'm happy as a clam with this set up. I have never had this much dynamic control, articulation speed, and tone quality as I do with this set-up. I cannot recommend anything more exciting than going to Greg's home in Illinois and receiving his wisdom and patience as you literally try his mouthpieces with his critique.
The purchase proceses was as fun as the joy I get in playing his mouthpiece.
And no, this is not a commercial:-)! I'm not getting paid for this! But I highly recommend you give his a try!

i've also been using a Hite premier, just happened to be the most affordable but still good mouthpiece i could manage a couple of years ago when my son borrowed forever my 5rv van doren. when i tried to go back to the vandoren I couldn't adjust to it. my partner in orchestra has a top of the line buffet with a greg smith(never heard of it before) sounds very wonderful. its a joy to play next to. me envious.

I am playing the Vandoren A3 since 1994, with Vandoren standard 3.5 reeds, and am very happy about it. for these years i have tried many other mouthpieces and reeds, and even played a Pomarico Diamond Mellow for a few months. but still returned to A3. it has its character, fewer reeds will work with it, articulation requires more work, but it works for any style, the sound is so much beautiful and even in all dynamics and registers and it gives so much control over sound colors that anything is worth this. i think.

Gennusa Excellente 1.04mm opening. It has enough resistance to let the whole range speak effortless. For example the opening of Brahms F minor sonata becomes more easy to do than on any other mouthpiece that I have played. Very reed friendly. This mouthpiece has also greater power range than any Zinner based mouthpieces that I've tried specially in the low register. And lastly it has deep and dark sound but the main thing about it is that it makes my live much easier.

Vandoren B40 with blue box 3½ reeds on Eb.
Both with the plain Buffet factory ligature reversed.
Haven't made up my mind on bass - used nothing but Selmer F for years but for a few months I've been going between Vandoren B40 and Selmer G depending on the piece (the former for nice, well-behaved, warm fuzzy feelings, the latter if I need to make a noise - it also plays easily through five octaves if need be). Just discovered the Vandoren B50 though, which seems to be the most versatile I've tried so far. All with Vandoren Optimum ligature and strength 3 reeds.
Contrabass - haven't found anything yet that works better for me than the factory mouthpiece. I live in hope though.

Now what I'm if anything even more curious about:
What mouthpieces have people used for a while and then moved on from? And why? (The one that came with the clarinet doesn't count. Unless you really did use it for a while.)
My Bb/A mouthpieces:
B45 in school
after my clarinets were stolen, another B45 which didn't work so well
M13 (did quiet things really nicely but I needed a bit more space)
B40 13 (nice fat sound, projected well but I needed to play at 443 when I settled in Germany)
B40
Had a Rovner ligature for a while then it felt like it had died. Moved on to Vandoren Optimum but then found the standard Buffet ligature reversed had the tang I wanted and a bit more carry, and of course cost basically nothing.

What's my current set-up? Lomax grenadilla (open? I got it secondhand, it looks like it might be marked O) with Rigotti Gold 3 reed and Vandoren Optimum ligature
What did I play before that? Pomarico ebony #0 with Zonda 3F and the Optimum
Why did I change? I had been playing Pomarico wood pieces for several years, first a 1, then a 0, and thought it was time to experiment a little. I got a Smith cocobolo and decided that I could get a better, fuller sound with it, but it was not as effortless to play as the Pomarico. Then a Grabner cocus, which I think I would be completely satisfied with and playing regularly, except this Lomax showed up at the auction site. Trying it out, I didn't have complete success with a Zonda reed, or a Vandoren, or a Gonzalez, so I got into my drawer full of odds and ends and tried whatever reeds I had there and with the Rigotti it was magic.
How about before that? My first good mouthpiece... Pomarico Ruby mellow, Zonda 2.5E and Rovner cloth lig
Why did I change? I dropped it and fractured the tip.
What's wrong with me, not using rubber like a normal person? I can admit that my being arbitrarily resistant to orthodoxy is a factor; no doubt it's the reason I originally tried out crystal and then wood mouthpieces. But by now I've tried a whole lot of mouthpieces, including a whole lot of rubber ones, some of which must've been 'good'. I prefer wood. I like the sound better, it's mellower than with rubber (although the difference may be in the intracranial vibrations -- I'm not claiming I could necessarily hear the difference between rubber and wood when someone else is playing), and I like the feel better.

depending on the horn B&H 926, Vandoren B46, Selmer HS and Buffet C Crown (despite the prejudice against buffet mouthpieces - what don't work for one person ain't necessarily bad)

noone has yet mentioned McClune mpc's.
i've got a 1.05 spe.
its a great mpc, although i have to work hard to controll the classical sound, the tone is far better than any other i've tried. good intonation too; with my BC RC Bb/A from -79.
its closed and short, and i use VD v12 5 and a optimum lig.
i awaits the arrival of a Chadash/Hill. any month now...

I still use the Hite D as my classical facing and the Vandoren m15 and m30 as back up pieces..David Hite made 2 facings personally for me and I was quite lucky with how well they suited my playing. On top of that they tune very well and are not as quirky as some facings.

I am using a Vytas Krass N-19 "Nutcracker" (I have two!) I also own several vintage hard rubber mouthpieces that have been reworked by Vytas. If you have not tried his mouthpieces you are missing out on a very good thing!

Also interested in the R model, but can't afford it at the moment. His B seems the odd one out - people who like it don't seem to like the other two as much and vice versa.

Interesting that you say that. I had a concert last night where I was playing two very different pieces by Kagel. One needed a traditional, reasonably straight sound. The other needed an enormous palette of various vibratos, various amounts of breath noise, and just occasionally blowing the rest of the group off the stage. So I used my B40 for one piece and brought my B45 out of mothballs for the other.
I've never used different mouthpieces for different pieces in a concert before. I suppose the next step is changing during a piece... :-/

I know very little about the "R" model, but Richard Hawkins recommended the "B" when I told him that I'd been playing on Vandoren M13 Lyre and M15. I liked the "B" as soon as I played it.
The B is brighter than I had expected. I can hear a difference between it and the M13L, which seems slightly less bright. The M15 sounds more covered than either of them, but certainly not dark.
I like them all, but I find that the Hawkins "B" fits my embouchure better, and with a slightly stronger reed than I have been used to responds easily and is particularly good at voicing higher notes.

to end discussion, the tone is fine. the sound is very easy to change, therefor kind of hard to play in a strict "classical" fashion, but im doing it so it cant be that hard.
(im sorry for my bad english, im doing the best i can...)

Vandoren B40 Lyre traditional pitch, non profile 88.
After many years and many mouthpieces, this is the best for me and my playing. Very responsive, flexible, and colorful. It's very easy to play to it's "dark" B40 side or a much "brighter" M13 Lyre type sound with no effort at all.

Well Niclas as I've said here before then I use the same setup for everything I play,classical,contemporary,jazz,pop and just name it. What I do is I just strive for the best sound as I can every time I play. I've also seen Ben Redwine comment here on the same idea as I do. What I do is I relax my embouchure when I play pop or jazz and I might use a little bit softer reed but that's all I change. Take for example Eddy Daniels, he use 1.04 mm opening and #4 Vandoren reeds for everything he does. Stan Getz used to play on reeds #4 if I'm not wrong.

I generally use open mouthpieces with medium facing and softer reeds like Vandoren 3. Im satisfied with my Vandoern B45 Lyre Profile88 and B45 Lyre. They are not said to be 'comfortable' mouthpieces. I agree, but I think the big, bright and resonant tone has some price, for eg. the clarinet has to be blown...I simply cannot understand those who say comfort is the most important. By the way yes, you usually have to adjust the reeds to the B45 Lyre, but if you are lazy, play B40 M30 5RV and some other junk...Of course you can make reeds yourself and this is exactly what I do with a great success by the way. I recommand it to every clarinettist to try it.

Wow--a 2003 thread revisited. FWIW, I'm pretty much the same as I was "back then"", however, I have lost my Greg Smith "Cicero" mouthpiece--suspect it got tossed in the trash accidently. But I'm still playing my beloved original Chicago Kaspar #14--that I got in 1960 in college--with my Bay copy as backup. For jazz, I use a WW G8 that was customized by my old clarinet professor, Glenn Bowen. Regardless, even tho I use another R13 (gold plated) with that mouthpiece, my tone quality is pretty much the same as with my "concert" R13's and the real Kaspar. And, btw, I am now using Forestone reeds on all of my clarinets and saxophones. Other than this, "things" are much the same as they we way back in 2003.

I use a Clarke Fobes Cicero #14 on my Selmer Signature with a Backun/Morales Cocobolo barrell and Gonzales FOF 3.5 Reeds.
Clark makes great mouthpieces, also try Grabner's, Greg Smith ,
and Lomax and Hawkins Models
For me and my setup the Fobes plays very close to the Kasper I once had.

In my community band, I play bass clarinet and use a Pomarico crystal #2. Very nice, great projection with Légère 3 I/4 for outdoor use.
For my Bb, I play a Grabner CXZ-SW2 and cane reeds (Vandorens or Gonzalez FOF).

I'm like the Backun Traditional mouthpiece/and Vandoren traditional reeds №3,it's nice a mouthpiece!. With its help my instrument fills up with sound the hall of the Opera theatre. Its amazing timbre at fortissimo allows to cover the whole orchestra with its might preserving the sound clear!!!

1st time post, older player. I've played a Selmer 9* since I bought it new, starting with the stock HS*. I've tried a lot of mpc.s. I like the Meyer 4M and the Vandoren B45, but they both play flat on my horn. The HS** plays extremely well with good flexibility and in tune (3.5 Alexander or Olivieri rd).
I recently bought an Eddie Daniels 2(FUN) mpc for a song - I couldn't pass it up. I like it, but it also takes my Selmer a little flat. Any recommendations on how to improve the intonation? What reed would work best with it? Any explaination on the difference between ED1 & 2? I can't find any info on them anywhere.

TPSClarSax, if other mouthpieces play flat for the Selmer you have, then I would look into getting a barrel a mm or so shorter for the instrument, assuming you want to try other than Selmer mouthpieces.

By far, a Morales-Backun Mouthpiece is the best option. It has an extremely focused and powerful sound. I use an "L" (Legend) facing of the mouthpiece which is relatively close. It's important to have the facing that fits you the best for the perfect sound that you are looking for. Morrie offers a great array of facings. THE PERFECT MOUTHPIECE DOES EXIST!

I play on an ED1. My understanding is that the main difference between the two is that the ED2 is more open--1.09 mm, as opposed to the ED1, which has a 1.04 mm opening. See http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=290840&t=290797.
The ED1 mpc I play on is described as "classical" (which is what I use mine for, primarily, being a symphony guy), but be not deceived. It's a very versatile mpc and would be great for jazz, too, as it is remarkably easy to gliss and bend pitches with it. I love mine.
I don't know about the facing length of the ED2, and of my own mouthpiece, I haven't measured the exact length. However, I think the ED1's facing length can be characterized as "medium."
I'm currently playing on Rico Reserve #4's. Prior to that I played on Grand Concert Evolution #3.5's. I like these reeds because they tend to be very responsive and allow you to make soft, delicate entrances with relative ease.
A while back I tried using blue box Vandoren #4s and I found them a tad hard, while the #3.5s tended to run soft. I haven't tried using V12's on it, but I noticed from Eddie Daniels' website that it says he uses #4 V12's or #4 blue box. I'm guessing that the V12's probably play about the right strength out of the box and he perhaps does some thinning to the blue box reeds.
Or maybe he just prefers a harder reed than I do. Everybody's different. Anyway, I hope that helps.

I was playing my new ED2 last night - testing a variety of reeds to see what goes best with it. It lets me play the altisimo reg. with almost as much finesse as Mr. ED himself.
BTW, I found this new ED2 on eBay for $30.! It's list price is $220.!

In general, I play a pair of Hans Zinner "George Pieterson model" mouthpieces. They were designed at the request of Pieterson, former principal of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, from his Fritz Wurlitzer original. Gorgeous mouthpiece--powerful, rich, flexible. Very much the sort of thing so associated with Pieterson's playing (though it won't turn you into Pieterson to play one LOL!!)
Occasionally I pull out the original Fritz Wurlitzer mouthpiece that came with the instrument--it's great to get that feel of playing the instrument entirely as Fritz intended it from top to bottom--and one of the real benefits to playing a Wurlitzer is that they are complete like that--no need to mix and match various 'stock' parts, etc. But the facing on this leans more towards considerably harder reeds than I am comfortable with. Still, there's no beating that set-up for things like Schumann, etc.,--it's the real German deal.
For jazz, I use one of a pair of Viottos in my collection.
