 ACK! Broken bass
Author: Willie
Date:   2000-04-11 05:12

Tonight at rehearsal, the middle tenon socket on my daughters Bundy bass snapped off. I;ve heard of tenon replacement, but never done it or even seen it for that matter. Is there a reasonal repair for this or would a new section be cheaper? I've glued a couple sopranos back together with success, but the bass is so much longer and heavier. WAHH!

Willie,
A bass is not much different than a soprano in respect to this kind of repair. As you say, a bass is just bigger.
Assuming it's plastic, black weld-on ABS glue (adverised for gluing ABS plastic sockets on clarinets) is available just for that purpose. If it's a 'clean' break and will fit back together okay you'll probably be fine without the need to replace anything. Rather than a do-it-yourself project, although you could try it, a local repair shop will no doubt have the right size grafting jig to hold the piece in place while it sets up. Not a major job but one best done by a repairperson - they see this sort of thing routinely, although usually (but not necessarily) from the instrument being dropped on a hard surface. So, don't feel bad, it can (unfortunately) happen to anyone. Ask 'em if they have a loaner while hers is being fixed.
I like ACK! better than WAHH! It's not that big a deal unless you're in the solo spotlight when it happens. Then it's an... Oh, AAACKK!

The strange thing about this is it just snapped. Ever since her old plastic Bundy soprano fell through the bleechers and became a 10 piece clarinet, she has been very good about not banging or dropping her instrument or the case. Its mostly a zig zag break with no sign of an earlier crack. Fortunately it doesn't include the tone port or mounting posts. I'll call Fred @ H&H tomorrow and see if he has this goop. He's only about 15 miles away. Thanks!
