 Selmer or rubbish?
Author: Gobboboy

I have recencently aquired (through an old friend) and old clarinet which I know nothing about and wondered if anyone out there has any knowledge of it....

so, its says on every joint (bell and barrell included) STUDENTE CONSOLE Selmer, London, Foreign - D 1720 - the clarinet seems to be made of wood although the bell is plastic (or some other material)

Has anyone ever heard of one of these before and know of its age, value etc..?

any info would be much appreciated

Merry Christmas!

I had one a few years back. I am London based. I managed to get a hundred bucks for it. It's not amazing. Sadly.

Check the underside of the LH levers - if there are raised numbers on them, then it has the dreaded mazak keys. If not, you're safe - but it's just a wooden student model clarinet, and today's equivalent is a wooden Amati.

Are the keys nickel plated or unplated nickel silver?

We had a similar discussion only a few days ago:

PS What exactly is 'mazak' and why are they dreaded?

Mazak is an alloy used in casting keys in one piece on cheaper instruments (though now single piece nickel silver castings are used as well, but these are much better), it has a low melting point and it's very soft and can break easily if bent.

There are ways of repairing broken mazak keys, but it's easier to silver solder a broken nickel silver key.

Thanks guys!

yes the instrument is clearly a heap! but it will make a very good lamp!

just wondered if it was a rare piece that should be in a museum and would have made me rich in time for christmas!

Cheers

ps: no masak in sight so it'll be a good quality lamp!!
