Mozart Quintet

Hello,

I just wanted to update on the Mozart Quintet (with piano instead of strings) saga.

My pianist ordered the "Grand Sonata" which was released in 2005 arranged by Christopher Hogwood. Evidently, he researched the original manuscript and put down what he found (except for b-flat clarinet instead of a clarinet or basset). We rehearsed it last week and it worked pretty well--even better than I thought it would. We did have to edit a couple of the measures to make the piano part as good as it could be. Since the pianist has practiced this part, this is probably what we will perform.

Thanks to all the suggestions from the board, I found and ordered the Breitkopf Edition # 8784 from Germany. This one is in the right key and looks as if the string parts were simply put into a piano version, although I am not at home where I can compare the string parts to verify this.

I'll show this new version to the pianist tonight and hopefully he'll choose to do this one, but probably not. Thanks again for all of your suggestions and support.

funny, I was looking through the March 2005 CF Peters Catalogue the other day and noticed that they carry:

Quintet K581 for Clarinet Bb and Piano (EP19b)
Quintet K581 for Clarinet A and Piano (EP 19c)

and!

Grand Sonata - Arrangement by Mozart of the Piano Quintet (GM 503)

So there are two "Grand Sonatas" for clarinet and piano: one of the clarinet/string quintet and one of piano/winds quintet.

I didn't know (and would like to know for sure) that Mozart had done the arrangement of the Piano/Wind Quintet.

i'm sure that there is an article in The Clarinet about the "Grand Sonata" version of the Quintet- published not long after the death of Mozart. I understood that this was now available- are you sure that your 2005 publication is arranged by Hogwood, or edited by him? i don't know why he'd have to arrange it if it was already done 200 years ago.... i'll look through my old clarinet mags when i get a minute...

I didn't know that "The Clarinet" has been around that long - must be a rival to the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitschrift

nice one Larryb, very sloppy writing on my part (though i'm sure that everyone understood what i meant)
i really doubt that Mozart arranged the Piano/Wind quintet as a Clarinet sonata.... but he may have done so for Violin and it was later transcribed for clarinet.... SURELY if Mozart had transcribed it for Clarinet we'd know all about it.....
from my poor memory- the Clarinet Quintet transcription was done after his death.... ok= i'll look through my old magazines (sadly they're not in order)
