Deg Barrel: Eddie Daniels Moennig Round Sound

I am very skeptical about using an aluminum barrel but am pleasantly surprised after playing one. My stock wood barrel is 66mm and I got this 65mm to give me some room in sharp situations. I also wasnt sure how the moennig bore would work with my Leblanc since I thought moenning barrels are for Buffets. Deg makes no such claims so I assumed it was designed for any clarinet.

Anyway, my instrument played with comfortable amount of resistance with the deg. I was also surprised that there is a difference in tone between my deg accubore and this deg ED moennig barrel. The ED moenning has the same darkness and fullness as my stock. I also loved hoow this barrel evened out the response of the whole clarinet. I don't have to make as many tonal adjustments. So I'm surprised that would actually like this barrel made of aluminum.

I just ordered another one that is 64 mm because I feel I could use even more elbow room in sharp situations. Super20 posted before that he is successful on a 64 with his LL. Will dropping 2 mm from the stock barrel cause the whole range to sharpen equally or will some notes sharpen more than others? I wouldn't want to have a comfortable B but have to deal with an insanely sharp open g, for example.

Doing that will definitely affect some notes more than others, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, your clarinet might be more in tune this way. If you open the barrel, the notes that are closer to the barrel will be flatter than the notes you play when closing the entire clarinet. For example, open G will be much flatter when you open the barrel than low G. Just think logically. When you play let's say throat Bb you use about 20cm of the clarinet. For middle B you use the entire length let's say about 70cm. I'll exaggerate and say you open your barrel 1cm. That is 1/20 of the Bb, but only 1/70 of the middle B, so it will make the length of the clarinet for the Bb much more compared with itself than for the B.
I hope it was clear, it was a little difficult to explain in English.

I've never used a metal barrel but have wondered how they affect condensation.....I'd expect you would get more......and that it would take longer to overcome sharpness in a cold venue.

Actually, the deg barrel would be my first choice in a cold situation. They warm up very quickly so you don't have to wait for the pitch to go up.

They also cool down very quickly.
