In the 1st mvt, 3rd measure, 3rd set of 32nds - should the last note be a D or D#? It's difficult to tell on my copy if the accidental marking is a natural or a sharp.
Thanks in advance.

Donald Martino died Thusday at 74.
His obituary appears in today's New York Times (Monday, December 12)
I appreciated his passion for lost 19th Century Italian opera fantasies for clarinet (I think he wrote about them in an issue of The Clarinet), which he began reprinting through his publishing firm, Dantalian, Inc.

Heather, do you want to know the right notes becuase it's now a required Army audition piece?

Heather,
I think it really is the D#, It is a little ambiguous being that there is a D# as the last note of the 2nd group of 32nds, but that entire lick seems based on semitone patern of up 1, down2, down1 at that spot in the other licks. It's the extra cortesy acidental that goofs up the thinking. Plus if it were a Dnatural In the last 32nd note group they wouldn't have added that natural. I've been working on this piece for 2 weeks now and I can play the first page at a quarter=70 and it's freekin hard. If it were an army audition piece 3/4 of the Field band clarinet section wouldn't be in. I'm going to get it though, after all I'm a retired E8 all I do all day is practice!

My thoughts exactly - I'd been working on it for a while and then starting thinking about it probably too much... D# sounds right but that darn courtesy accidental threw me off a bit then I guess I started overthinking it. Anyway, as far as tempo is concerned I'm about at the same point you are. It's a wild piece. Yeah, if it was a requirement a lot of Army Bandspersons might be salting french fries. Just jokes.... I'm planning on using it for an upcoming recertfication of my C1. Ought to do the trick, no?

I managed to find really solid fingerings for the High Bb and B and doing those measures really slowly lots of times is the key!

It's certainly not one of those pieces that just lies nicely under the fingers. Definitely a challenge!
