The Transportation Security Administration has recently relaxed the rules about what may be brought on board a plane:

Thus, you will still need to put reed knives, razor blades, rat-tail files, long screwdrivers, large files with a pointed tang, etc. in checked baggage.

Luckily most clarinets are flat enough to put in the overhead compartment.

My oboe teacher handed her reed knives, etc. over to the staff, but never got them back.

Wouldn't have been too bad if it was just the cheapo Pisoni or Rigotti knives, but these were expensive ones that aren't made anymore.

I don't quite understand why she would have done that, because they tell you that you can't count on getting anything back if it's given to the security people or flight crew. They've told me my choice was either put it in my checked baggage or lose it.

I was also able to transfer some stuff from my clarinet case into my checked luggage. Most airlines will allow this, unless you've already checked your luggage. The best plan is to put it in your checked luggage to begin with--AT HOME before you get to the airport.

I once had this happen with some items and went to find an overnight courier desk in the airport, so I could mail them to myself.
