 Unaccompanied Bass Clarinet Solo?
Author: BassClarinetGirl

Does anyone know of a good solo for the unaccompanied bass clarinet? I am looking for something grade 3-5, not too hard and preferably a comfortable range for the student-model bass clarinet (so, no extended range possibilities). I appreciate all suggestions!

Thanks,
BCG

'Press Release' by David Lang is one of the best I heard. It sounds pretty difficult though....

Edit: Oops, I missed the part in your post about no extended range, sorry.

Excursions by Keith Cole is a great student level piece. It is a set of variations on the common Pagganni theme. it has the option to go down to the low C but doesn'[t expect it. Fairly long but you don't have to do all of hte variations. Some are a little difficult employing a range to High A and has some fast tounging issues.

If a piano is possible the Bozza is a fine piece. As well as the Hindemith Basson sonate.

Let me think during my rehearsal about other solo pieces.

Thanks for replying. I see that sheetmusicplus has Excursions, so that is a possibility. Any other suggestions are welcome!

Check out "Voltage Suite" by Pierre Max DuBois. Some of the movements are well within the ability of an ardent high school musician. One caveat: the music calls for slap tongue (Vive la France!--they like Jerry Lewis, too); I think it doesn't do any harm to just use normal sharp staccato in those places.

Another route to follow might be exemplified by our local UW--Madison professor of saxophone, composition and jazz ensemble who regularily gives full solo recitals on bass and contrabass clarinets using nothing but improvised repretoire in a variety of musical syles, not just jazz (which he is very good at). Also, recently, he gave an all improvised recital on the Eb clarinet (effer). His self proclaimed motto is, "Never be limited by lack of written literature".

(his doctorate is in composition from Eastman)

Hmm, thats really interesting. When I play by myself or practice, I play from a variety of tenor sax jazz pieces and other assorted Bb music... but I don't know if totally improvised repretoire would be appropriate for contest... Thanks though, that sounds fun.

I had the pleasure of hearing Les Thimmig (U of WI) play the Donald Martino Triple Concerto (Cl, Bcl, Contra) some years ago at a ClarinetFest, and he was astounding! Is he really an Eastman DMA--I thought he was a Yaley.

Our Wisconsin School Music Festival handbook has a catagory for student compositions as well as solo improvisation.

Perhaps your school music "contest" might also have a similar listing that you could take advantage of.

LarryB--we are both correct: Eastman and Yale
