 German Cut Bass Clarinet Reeds
Author: bass9396

I'm trying out the Vandoren Black Master reeds on Soprano and they're working out very well. I know that Vandoren does not produce the "fancy pants" reeds(56, V12, etc.) for Bass because they'd probably sell 3 boxes a year.

I was wondering, however, where might one get German Cut Reeds for Bass Clarinet? I'm assuming that someone produces them, but I'm not really sure who. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Do you have a German-style mouthpiece on which to play such reeds (which presumably would be narrower than the standard French-style reeds)?

You might try Steuer & Esser, if memory serves they make bass clarinet reeds for the German style of mouthpiece (but I could be wrong, as Nixon allegedly once said).

Thank you!!! I've never heard of Steuer and Esser, I guess that would have been part of the problem.

On another note, no, I don't use a German Style mouthpiece, but many times the reeds for those mouthpieces work on American Mouthpieces. I figure it's worth a try....if it doesn't work it's no big deal.

Would German-style reeds be more likely to work on a Bay mouthpiece with its narrower window?

Who makes the German-style mouthpieces for Bass, and how well do they integrate with a Boehm instrument?

Does anyone in the US carry Steuer & Esser reeds?

All of the German bass clarinetists that I know use Steuer reeds on bass. Why don't you email Steuer directly and ask where you can buy his reeds?

Thank you for the input. I've contacted Holblaeser, so hopefully they can help me. Actually, a representative from Vandoren told me that they only make the traditional cut for Bass.....perhaps they're mistaken? I'll take as much feedback as I can get.

Legere is planning to make available (or already has) reeds for German-style bass clarinets. This is directly from Guy Legere about 3 months ago. Steve Fox brought this up originally.

I got a response from Holzblaeser and they actually do NOT have White Masters for Bass. It's a typo. Seems Steuer is the only choice right now. Anybody use the Steuer's?

When I played German bass clarinet, I used Vandoren java alto sax reeds. I did not like the Steuer reeds. My neighbour as well uses vandoren alto sax reeds for german bass clarinet.
On my Buffet 1193-2 I use Vandoren Traditional (blue box) tenor sax reeds (3.5) together with a pomarico 2. I can not imagine, that german reeds could fit in any way a Boehm mp (alto sax <-> tenor sax)?

Would Seuer reeds actually fit a standard "French" size bass clarinet mouthpiece? I ask this because I use Black Masters on my regular clarinet with no fit problems at all, but the Steuer reeds may be physically too small to reach the rails. Otherwise I'd try them like a shot.

I use S-E German bass reeds on my O. Hammerschmidt Klingson bass. They respond best for me compared to alto sax, C melody sax, or alto clarinet reeds on this instrument. The bore on this particular instrument in narrower than most German basses, but S-E German bass reeds would not fit a standard Boehm bass mpc. These reeds are dimensionally between an alto clarinet reed and alto sax reed, which are too small for a Boehm bass mpc. If you are looking for a smaller reed (for whatever reason), you may try C melody sax reeds. They can be hard to find, though.

I have a box of Esser bass clarinet reeds that someone gave me years ago. They are very narrow--definitely will not work on a French system bass clarinet mouthpiece. They are even narrower than alto clarinet reeds!

Alexander Willscher makes very good reeds. Highest quality.
