 Hearing Aids
Author: Paul Lester

I just recently started using an in-ear electronic hearing aid. After many attemps at adjusting the response curve of the amplifier, I'm still having problems with my clarinet sounding like a clarinet. It has improved the speech recognition but leaves a lot to be desired with hearing music. I also play the piano and notice a definite "ping" with each note I play on the keyboard.

Anyone out there using a hearing aid and achieving favorable results with hearing their clarinet as it actually sounds?

I do not know the brand and model of hearing aid that my pro tutor used, but he had at least one, if not two of them. He used at least one hearing aid all of the time, as far as I could tell. Whether he had adjusted it (or them) or got used to it (or them), I don't know. However, I do know that he could play and peg the meter smack in tune and he could do everything else required to keep up to a very high professional level, even with hearing aid(s). His arthritis obviously slowed him down some, but he obviously could hold his own with amateurs and pros alike.

Keep doing your research and try every hearing aid you can until one works for you and for your conditions.

I use hearing aids in both ears and also play Piano and Clarinet. They are Danalogic 163D. These units have three programmable settings.I have one setting dedicated to my instruments. After several attempts to get this setting to my satisfaction I had the technition bring his computer to my Piano and adjust my aids to my instructions as I played.Speach is not so good on this setting but the Piano and Clarinet sound great.Be aware your brain needs time to adjust to the new sounds---I have just had my music setting boosted slightly recently for this reason.
