 Leblanc model?

I recently bought a very nice Leblanc clarinet but I have not been able to identify its model. Can anyone help me with this matter based on a attached close-up photo of the logo?

Thanks a lot.

It's the LL model. From the late 50s to the late 60s, I think. I play one as a spare.

The logo above is two L's (one facing the other - LL). You can read reviews, and from what I've read on this board, the general consensus is that they're pretty darned good. Sherman Friedland wrote in his archives that he had a pair of LLs that he LOVED to play.

Incidentally, what do YOU have to say about it? Have you tried it out? Does it play well?

I just got this horn, so I am not ready to give you a conclusive opinion. Anyway, thanks everybody for helping me to identify this model and I will look carefully for reviews on this board.

If you like it, look after it well and keep using it for as long as you can.

I think they're much better in many respects than the ones they make now.

I've also owned several LL Leblancs over the years and have found them to be quite nice to play in all situations from big band to classical. Their versatility is one of the things clarinetists enjoy about them. Also, they usually have excellent intonation up and down the scale. With a complete overhaul (I'm assuming you're probably going to need pads, etc.) you'll have a better than new instrument because of the quality of wood, etc. As Chris P. said, in many ways they are better than today's models. A good one is a good find.

My Bb LL does not have the metal ring around the tenon connection that is shown in his picture. I've seen that ring on others as well. Does my LL's lack of that ring indicate it's age?

BTW- I purchased my LL for $400 7 years ago with the idea that I would purchase a new clarinet when I had $3,000 or so to spend. I've tried as many clarinets as I can get a hold of and haven't found anything I like better.

Hi sdN - I just looked at my Leb L7 [1980's model] and it also has no metal tenon cap on the U J. My assumption is that Leb's practice [then] was to cap student cls, but not the pros, depending upon [our] greater care being given. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Even though my LL full Boehm has the top tenon cap, the inside diameter on it is wider than the bore by about 1mm, so there's a step some 0.5mm around the inner circumference, but I've sealed this void with wax.

It's a great clarinet, but I don't really like the lack of the metal lined middle socket (like on Selmer and Buffet full Boehms).

(Fingers crossed while I click 'Post' - SORTED!)

What is the purpose of the metal tenon cap?

Prevents damage to it from assembly/dissassembly (there have been some "woe-filled" tales on this board of chipped and cracked and fractured tenons and whether they can be repaired. In each case, it was a tenon WITHOUT a metal tenon cap)

All the pictures i see of LLs show a metal cap on the top joint. I bought my LL used and sometimes worry that the metal cap was removed. Has anyone ever seen a LL without a metal cap?

Do any of you know a good place to send a LeBlanc LL for overhaul? Bill Gamble
