This weekend we had a masterclass organized by Selmer. It was a great day and there where some pictures taken.. today I was looking trough the pictures and also the previous masterclass… that’s when I made the following discovery,

So for the people who don’t believe in reverse clarinets… I think that the picture above is proof enough….

OpusII,

Now that's really cool! Some pretty bad looking embouchures in the group but the reversed clarinet is neat.

Here is a link to a previous discussion on the reversed clarinet with a picture of Abe Galper's clarinets.

BTW The old big band leader Johnny Long played violin with the right hand fingering notes because of an injury from a farm accident when he was young.

He even has a reversed ligature.

Let's just hope it was worth the hassle and expense making a left-handed clarinet if he plays it well.

Or (for the PC brigade) as long as he benefits from it.

Isn't 't more important that he's having fun?

Its far more important that he's having fun.

You can reverse the Rovner ligs at will - every time I pull mine apart for cleaning and put it back together it comes out the other way than it was (or so it seems). Drives other people batty when they try to use it.

(Yes, I also have a left-handed bevelled-edge reed knife.) I'm not completely left-handed, though, I write and eat with my left but throw, etc. with my right.

I don't see the benefit of reversing the sides to a lefty, though, other than supporting the instrument with your left hand - but there are other ways to solve that.

Maybe he had a injury at his right hand and couldn't support the clarinet with it... But I don't know the reason because I didn't met him...

Then there's the famous left handed saxophone section of Les Brown's Band Of Renown.

I've got an old posting on this from AOL somewhere in my archives; I'll see if I can dredge it up.

I have seen and held a beautiful left handed clarinet, custom made by Howarths in London.

For anyone who desires a mirror image clarinet, they make them to order, one piece at a time.

How long ago was that?

The one they show on their website is just a reversed photo.

Do notice that he's wearing a neckstrap as well.
