I've got the opportunity to play the clar/bass/sax part of this musical in the summer. I have the orig Bdway recording and there are some wonderful tunes. Anyone played it out there ? Opinions ?

Paul Garment was the regular cl/b.cl/sax player for "Jekyll & Hyde" during its Broadway run, and he enjoyed playing the show.
I subbed for him many times; the "pit orchestra" was elevated above the stage, so we could watch the action down below. It was quite a moving show...!
The clarinet part is a handful, with some quick switches to bass. The Alto Sax part has a major "jazz" solo that we played differently each night. It's a tricky book, that takes some real "woodshedding", but well worth the effort.
If anyone out there gets a chance to play the show, go for it...!

I played this book the summer before last for a well-done local community theater production. I agree with John that it is alot of fun. There were some differences between the version we did and the original cast recording, e.g., "Good 'n Evil" on the recording (one of my favorite songs) was not in our version. The music was there, but as an alto sax solo ("Outside the Dregs"). The liner notes to the CD discuss some of the evolution of the show. I don't know if we had an earlier version or a later one.
As I recall, there wasn't alot of alto sax in the show but what there was was exposed. Also, as I recall, the bass clarinet part called for a number of low (written) D's -- so take your extended bass or the cardboard roll from a roll of paper towels.
Not the greatest musical I have played but, as I look back on it, one of my favorites.
