Our local 'classic music' radio has 75 years, and they celebrated this with a top 75 of all time 'classic works'. (12 hours non stop , 7 am to 7 pm)
Listeners could select the best 75 works ever, and guess what ..
with Mozart's Clarinet concerto, we clarinetists made nr. 9, no other concerto (or instrument) made top 10, so ... a right choice !!
But sorry to say : 'Bach's Matheus Passion' made number 1, without clarinets :-(.
Runner up (Nr 2 =), once again Mozart, with the requiem, not really clarinet, but close ... (given the KV numbering)

Classic FM has Mozart's clarinet concerto at No.3 in it's top 300 (it was at No.2 a while back) - No.1 being Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto for several years now.

Hi,
I actually saw Classic FM's 2001 Top Ten concert performed live at the Opera House.
The Concerto was introduced by the compare with a message from one of the Sydney's Symphony clarinettists as saying:
"this is to remind those whingey whiny violins whhere the true heart and soul of the orchestra lies." I loved that comment!!
A mobile phone rang during the middle of it and everyone was horrified - a huge intake of breath and 'oh' could be heard.
Afterwards the commentator said: "That was Mozart ringing. He just wanted to say how much he was enjoying the performance."

Quite right too. I congratulate the Belgians on impeccable discrimination and taste.
As a matter of interest, where did César Franck figure in the Belgian hit parade?

We may have talked about this before, I'm not sure...my primary d'amore is a cocobolo Howarth with gilded mechanism, but I also have a Bulgheroni that I like a great deal.

No, but I seem to recall that it was featured on the Howarth website several years ago, and I wanted one *terribly*. Alas, it will have to wait until I procure my Marigaux Altuglass oboe and English horn set :-P
(Now where are THEY in the Top 10? *huff*)

As much as I like my Marigaux 930 cor anglais, I wouldn't want a transparent perspex one. Kinda like the transparent B12s that were around about 15 years ago.
Not a nice thing to see condensation forming in the bore as you're playing.

I think it's all about shock value, really...although I do hear that they play remarkably well.
Sounds like you've got quite a collection...I recall you saying you also have a cocobolo XL cor. A man after my own heart I had to rearrange my apartment last year and dedicate an entire room to my horns and paraphernalia. (It's also my teaching studio, so I can rationalize...kind of irks visitors, though, when they come expecting a guest room!)

The cocobolo XL cor went out for sale the other Friday, but I did at least have a chance to try it out, but not in public as I used my Marigaux. It's dangerous trying out new instruments - I always end up wanting to keep them for myself!
I tried a new cocobolo XL oboe as well - I personally think my kingwood S5 is much better.

The radio station is called Klara (which apart from being a girls name is also a soort of short for 'klassieke radio', Dutch for Classic Radio)
On http://www.klara.be/html/ev_top75.html, you can see the whole list, and even listen to it.
Afterwards I learned that there was actually a 'pre-selection' so not every possible work ever composed could be voted for.

Apparently, the BBC programme "Desert Island Discs" ranks K622 one place higher than the Belgians do.
(I used to include 'Beim Schlafengehen' in my own list of eight records, but have removed it now I realise it's so popular....)
1. Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, last movement, 'Ode to Joy'
2. Schubert: Quintet in C second movement, 'Adagio'
3. Mozart: Cosi Fan Tutte, trio 'Soave sia il vento'
4. Beethoven: Symphony No. 6, 'Pastoral'
5. Richard Strauss: Four Last Songs, 'Beim Schlafengehen'
6. Elgar: Pomp and Circumstance, March No. 1
7. Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue
8. Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, second movement, 'Adagio'
9. Elgar: Cello concerto, first movement
10. Richard Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier - trio 'Marie Therese Hab mir's gelobt'
11. Brahms: Violin concerto, last movement
12. Wagner: Gotterdammerung - Siegried's Funeral March
13. Puccini: Tosca, aria 'Vissi d'arte'
14. Verdi: Nabucco, Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves
15. Rachmaninov: Piano concerto No.2, last movement
16. Dvorak: 'New World' Symphony, 'Largo'
17. Bizet: The Pearl Fishers, duet 'Au fond du temple saint'
18: Parry: Jerusalem
19. Beethoven: Fidelio, Prisoners' Chorus
20. Puccini: Turandot, 'Nessun Dorma'

If it was the third movement of Beethoven's 9th, that would have enough clarinet goings-on in it to keep us all happy.
But the general public are a fickle lot, but nice to see Richard Strauss twice in there and not a sniff of the other Strausses.

I could do with some Hindemith and Rimsky-Korsakov my self, the final movement of Scheherazade especially.

No Sjostakovitch ? and what happened with poor Mahler.
At least two composers who knew to appreciate a good clarinet(ist)
Maybe no more ranking, just enjoying it :-)

David, according to I only have a goog knowlegde of 5 from 20 "best" compositions.
The bad thing, I'm very uncultivated in musical terms
the good, there are at least 15 masterworks to know and enjoy.
No BACH????
