 Eb clarinet barrel
Author: OpusII
Date:   2005-05-12 13:50

I'm currently playing a Leblanc Eb clarinet. I really love the instrument, but my pre owner has shortened the barrel. It's a shame because it's really a fine instrument :(

I would like to replace this barrel with a good alternative, but I really don't know of any brands that produce Eb barrels. I would like to hear some review of different brands barrels if possible... I already searched in the archive but didn't had much luck for the Leblanc Eb, I did find the Backun barrels.

Clark Fobes makes a great barrel. I would definitely give them a try.

The Robert Scott plastic barrels are inexpensive and seem to work well -- I got mine from Muncy Winds.

my old Leblanc LL had a different socket size and i was unable to use "after market" barrels for it. I did manage to get a Scott on by various means, and the bore was not compatable. As far as i know most "after market" barrels are aimed at Buffet players.
i now have an old R13 which i play- the Scott barrels work quite well for the price, though you may have to remove Burrs from the bore- they don't seem to be "finished" very consistenly.
btw
my old Leblanc came with both Leblanc and Noblet barrels, which had very similar tuning characteristics.
it is possible that DEG makes an E flat barrel with a Leblanc bore....
hope this was of some help

FWIW, a friend of mine just had G. Chadash make a barrel for his Leblanc eefer, and it radically improved the pitch and sound of the horn. This is not an endorsement of this solution, or to knock any of the others -- just informational.

I played a Leblanc LL Eb full time for a year, and the barrel was far too short. I had to pull it out until the cork showed at the top and the bottom. I got rubber garden hose washers at a hardware store and sanded them down until they fit inside and out. This worked very well.

The Robert Scott barrel is great, the sound is more consistent and the intonation is almost perfect now, even the higher notes (and that for a Eb clarinet :))

So if you are searching for a new barrel, definitely give this barrel a chance! It’s not to expensive, but very impressive.

Phil Muncy told me (since this thread started some time ago) that he is working on a plastic E flat barrel as well as a new wooden e flat barrel.
From what i recall, he thought this may be ready late in 2005

(btw- good to hear that your problem has been resolved Opus11)

Another great barrel for Eb clarinet is the one Lou Gangale in Cleveland makes. It's the same barrel that Ted Johnson played in the Cleveland Orchestra. To the best of my knowledge Mark Nuccio also plays on this barrel. The great part about this barrel is that it is beveled flat on one side that you can play on a standard Bb reed on the Eb clarinet without having to cut the reed down.

That is a pretty similar concept to what Lou's barrels are like. I also play on a Hawkins Eb mouthpiece which works really well with the barrel.

Hawkins has a definite knack with the Eb mouthpieces.

I got an older one that he refaced (Bettoney blank) from one of his former students.
It was excellent, and is now being used by a pro for performance

I'm using a Peter Spriggs barrel on my Selmer Eb at the moment. The stock Selmer barrel was WAY too long. The Spriggs is 43mm.

Hello,

Wow! It looks as if even when you're NOT playing Dr. Segal's barrels, they are in tune!
