 Buffet Prestige Basset Clarinet

Has anyone played this or even owns one? If so, how is its intonation, response, eveness of dynamics throughout all registers, etc.? I am just wondering. I don't think its worth purchasing although it can be used as just a standard "A" clarinet which happens to have extensions to low "C". However if someone did intend to buy it with the intent to use it as an "A" clarinet in the orchestra, would they be wasting money?

All the basset clarinets are pretty much custom made - you won't find stores with a few of them to try out! That being said, comments from a few professional friends of mine who have tried them are not especially complimentary. Intonation tends to be worse, it's heavier, has more keywork, and the tone is not quite the same as an A.

The only one I ever saw in person was David Shifrin's clarinet. When I asked about it he said that there were many custom modifications made to the clarinet. Having said that I believe he also said that the upper joint was an A clarinet upper joint. Do not quote me on that last statement though.

The upper joint would be an “A” upper joint seeing the instrument is keyed in “A” .. the big change is in the lower joint having a range to the range of C. Bore is 14.65 mm like an RC “A” clarinet with a 65mm barrel. I have yet to play this one, but have played on a Selmer.
