New set of clarinets! WOO HOO!

Reason I asked about possibilities of selling the old, is because I've found the new.

I saw a classifieds ad pop up on this site with a set of leblanc opuses (make model that I've desired consciously/subconsciously for years - see THIS link for verification) I watched it for about a month debating, "Should I? Is it worth the sacrifices I'd have to make? Etc. Etc."

I recently bit the bullet and worked with the seller to organize payment and shipping, received them yesterday, tried them out in my community chamber ensemble and community orchestra, as well as had the clarinet instructor at the college look them over (he is the professor for the chamber ensemble class).

He loved them as much as I did. Simply marvelous. The Bb was brannenized when it was new, and had voicing work done by Morrie Backun. The A (I assume since nothing was written about it) is just adjusted to play, however sounds phenominal as well (my chamber ensemble instructor loved it so much that he offerred to sit in during one piece while playing it and transposing the music, and then jokingly asked if he could take it home with him because it was so good - and he seems to me to be the classic "buffet" man, owning a set of R13 prestiges)

Also with the clarinets (added bonuses that I didn't know would come!) were an altieri case to keep them in, as well as a CD of the air force band that the former owner was in, with him playing principle clarinet on THESE clarinets (most likely Bb in these recordings as it's and air force BAND) It's very interesting to actually listen to these clarinets under their former owner and see just how well they can sound in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing!

I ended up 'matching' them to my secondary mouthpiece (it just sounded better), and will be trying out a few metal ligatures. I like the rovner I've been using, but am just interested in a bonade, and I have a bois ligature that I want to try out or maybe some other since I haven't given them a shot yet (and frankly because recent postings have gotten me interested in that ligature game . . .)

So that's my story, and I think now that I can faithfully contribute to those "what's your setup" posts without putting up information that will soon change.

Alexi

Now to work on getting those backun barrels, bells, maybe some straubinger pads, a kooiman maestro thumbrest, a claripatch, a reed wizard, and then maybe, if I have time for it, I'll practice and try to develop some actual technique!

Congrats!! They sound wonderful. Glad you are happy and I'm sure that it doesn't hurt that your ensemble instructor loved them too. It's always nice to get the warm fuzzies from other players.

I personally also like to shop for accessories. I'm now trying to convince my hubby that I need a new case (since mine doesn't fit a humidifier), reed holder, and a lubyen lig to try. He's not hearing any of it.
Good luck, happy practicing and buying, :)
Jami

As a new Opus owner I can understand your excitement. And a Brannenized Opus--excellent. I'm having mine done as soon as I can arrange it with Linda Brannen. Voicing by Morrie Backun, huh? How great is that??? Awesome. Your money is well spent, my friend. You hit the jackpot!

Alexi,

I am very happy for you, there is little better you can do than purchase instruments that have been played by and maintained for a professional player.

I hope you get to enjoy them for many years to come.

Yes, I agree. And, to get one that has been Brannenized and voiced is such a treat. You would have spent mega-bucks on having that done to a new one--ask me how I know.

Ooooh come on, tell us, how EVER do you know?! hehe.

Congrats on your wise and lucky purchase. Leblancs are great BEFORE they go to the Brannens, I should know, I have an untouched Bb and a Brannenized A. Was your tuning miraculously better when you played in an ensemble? There's some lost sleep recovered right there.

Congrats Alexi!!

In reference to your lig comment, I'd recommend trying the Bonade inverted ASAP...I can not speak highly enough about them!
