We recently picked up a used Bundy clarinet as a 2nd instrument for my daughter (it was made around 1964 and was a gift from her aunt). We have had the instrument rebuilt, but the carrying case is in less than perfect shape. The red velvet cloth lining is stained black wherever the metal bands of the clarinet touched it, the rebuilder mentioned that he saw some moth larvae in the case and that they do damage to the pads, and the whole case has a musty, "probably once stored in a damp basement" odor. Does anyone have suggestions on whether (and how) we should clean up the case, or try to replace the lining, or look for a new case altogether? Thanks.

Wow! This sounds like a really nasty case. While you are looking for a replacement: vacuum it out, sponge bath the velvet with By-Pas cleaner and then air it out well (sunshine seems to help). The velvet can be brushed with a firm toothbrush which helps fluff it up and loosen some of the dirt. Spraying the lining with Febreze(the fake flower fragrance goes away after a couple of weeks), and brushing some more before a good drying will hide much of the bad odor. This process has worked for me three times so far, but I did have to discard a case that still smelled bad afterwards. Good luck , Todd

I say just buy a new case. You have just refurbished the Bundy so as they say, in for a penny, in for a pound. You can get a plastic case from wwandbw from anywhere of 30 to a ProTec case of 50 and up. I would just get the plastic case as the clarinet is a Bundy and your child isn't as likely to coddle *You know the don't touch the case you'll ruin the clarinet inside! coddling* it as if it were wood.

There are two other posts currently on the BB that deal with the "smelly case" syndrome. Look them up. However if the clarinet case is infestes with the "pad bug" (carpet beetle) it would be best to get a new case.

Inexpensive cases are out there both new and used. For cleaning the case I like K2R and a small brush. It will take care of most cork grease stains and dirt without using water. Some older cases tend to come unglued when wet. As for the "pad bugs", you could probably spray them with something, but in terms of time and cost, it may better to replace the case. Since most kids nowadays like to decorate their cases with stickers and writing, I'd go for a hard plastic case in lieu of the fancier fabric cases.
