I'll be in Austin for a week in early December. Any recommended events or places to see?

Ken

Sixth Street - best on the Friday and Saturday nights. Very tasteful.

Ken,

Try this link to find Austin entertainment events for the days you'll be here.

I agree with Brian about the austin360 site. It's got everything you need. And, of course, Austin is the "live music capital of the world." So you won't have a hard time finding places with lots of music for every budget.

If you want great Mexican food, go to Matt's El Rancho.

Something I've wondered for a few years...how many Austin area clarinetists are there out there? Maybe we could put together a little happy hour sometime. Any takers?

Austin -- the San Francisco of the south.

The UT School of Music has lots of stuff going on in early December. The Wind Ensemble is performing Wednesday, December 7 at 8 p.m. Check for more events at http://www.music.utexas.edu/calendar/calView.aspx

I just like wandering through Zilker Park or along Town Lake. Been about 4 years since I've visited, though. [frown]

Why hasn't Mark C. piped in, doesn't he still live here?

More to the point, there's a Flute Choir (and boy are they eager) here, but why no big community clarinet Choir.

Strangely enough, the two biggest tourist attractions are the state capital and Central Market, though I'm sure the new Whole Foods (located under their new corporate HQ) is gaining.

While the blues and rock scenes here are great, IMO the Jazz scene is a little weak in comparison.

Outdoors-wise, the weather in early December is usually great unless its raining. The hike and bike trail around the lake (all downtown) is a real gem, but it doesn't compare to being on the water. If there are two of you, renting a canoe at Zilker Park is a true Austin experience. (Or if you're feeling lazy, you can rent a powered boat at the Hyatt.)

True Austin Dives (other than the music venues):
Magnolia Cafe/Kirby Lane Cafe - not related, but largely the same fare - Kirby is a little more expensive but both very reasonable
El Sol y La Luna - Interior mexican / South American - definitely a dive - there are higher end interior Mexican places around and they're very good too, just not as Bohemian
Guerros - Great Margaritas, great atmosphere, decent Tex-Mex
Amy's Ice Cream - What can I say, its a categorical imperative

Trudy's/Chuy's: Tex Mex - like Gueros, but up a notch or 3 (in that order) on the kitsch scale (I think these two ARE actually owned by the same company.)

BBQ:
The best barbecue places are actually in the small towns surrounding Austin (and for some reason they all begin with "L".) However, in town, there's:
Ruby's (not to be confused with RuDy's): Kinda hi-filut'n as BBQ goes, but they know their stuff, its done right
Ben's Long Branch - Also great
Green Mesquite: Not the best barcecue, but the catfish platter is one of my favorites

All the Schlotsky's and all of the independent coffee shops have free wireless internet access (along with a large fraciton of the resturaunts.)

I wouldn't call Detroit "the other side of the world" ...

though somedays it does seem a world away from Austin.

(left Austin 2/12 years back due to being laid off twice in a period of 8 months)

We own a place at Lake Travis and are only there on weekends, but other than that it would be a great gig, Brian. We lived in Austin full time from 1968 to 1972. Be glad when we can be there more. I'm a Hill Country native--born in Fredericksburg.
