I have a soldier with a Buffet R-13 with an adjustable thumb rest that is broken. Is there any way to buy a replacement thumb rest, or can I try soder or super glue to fix. I'm trying the community before we bring it to the attention of his superiors. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Replacement adjustable thumbrests are available. Trying to glue it is a complete waste of time.

unfortunately, broken buffet adjustable thumbrests are all too common.
i posted a link on the other thread. ww&bw list them - i think they're back ordered for a few weeks.
you can order standard thumb rests (non-adjustable) from Ferree's Tools.
i haven't had much luck with super glue on them.

Any glue would be useless. Any repair effort would have to involve silver-soldering.

Hey Sarg,
I'm sure it's no consolation to hear but the Buffet adjustable thumbrests found on all their latest instruments are a pieces of crap.
Only two weeks on mine and I had to have a regular thumbrest installed at the preffered height.
PLEASE...PLEASE pass the word to get in the habit of putting the stress on the screw (or back part) of these pot-metal monsters when taking your horns apart.

WWandBW sells replacements for the Buffet thumbrest.
Consider also the aftermarket etude or pro model thumbrest.

Also worth trying (and much more comfortable, IMHO) are the Etude model adjustable thumbrests by Kooiman. I have them on all my clarinets, and they're fabulous. Cheap and easy to install, too! You can procure them from any major retailer of woodwind accessories.

Agreed that the Buffet item is fragile and, imho, worthless re adjustability. The Kooiman is bulky and soso. If it were me I'd simply install a regular tr...and consider the upside down placement.

If you can effort a Kooiman maestro, than it's a great solution… but it's still very expensive. The Kooiman Elite, seems to work very good but I’ve seen many reviews on them that where negative because of the bad screws provided by Kooiman. So if you decide to buy a Kooiman, then let it install by a repairer.
I only play on a Kooiman maestro because I've to (R.S.I.), otherwise I would inverse the thumb rest as BobD suggests.
